If you follow me on twitter, or are REALLY old school and are my friend in REAL life, then you know that I love (almost) all music and go on music binges where all I listen to for like two weeks is one band. I've done it this year alone with The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Eagles, and Huey Lewis and The News. I'm a big alt rock guy, but I love classic rock, country, rap, pop, basically everything. My latest music binge I just got really into is one of the greatest (boy) bands of my generation, and I want to tell you the story of how this happened. Here we go.
Last week I was trying to find this old Arctic Monkeys album "My Favourite Worst Nightmare" and I went to four different record stores and they didn't have it. That was kind of ridiculous to me, but at the same time I kind of get it, almost nobody buys CDs anymore and this album came out in 2007. But still I'd thought weird, smaller, local-ish stores would have it. God I must sound like such a pretentious hipster. I swear I'm not.
Finally I went up to FYE at the Warwick Mall and found it there. I was hesitate to buy it at first because it was $16. I don't know if you go into FYE a lot still which is understandable because it's 2016, but they have most of their CD's for under $10 now because CDs are dying and most people just stream music digitally. Since this CD is basically 10 years old I figured it would be less money. I still bought it because despite being a broke fake blogger I can swing $16 for a CD I really want. But this is just a principle thing to me, an indie-ish bands 10 year old CD shouldn't cost 16 bucks. Plus the cover was cracked I thought that deserved a discount, sort of like in Big Daddy then Sonny dents all the cans with Frankenstein to get a discount. But I guess FYE doesn't adhere by that rule.
This intro story has almost nothing to do with the main topic of this blog but had to paint the picture that led me to my new rediscovered love for something from my childhood.
So at FYE I always check out the cheap DVD and CD bins. You can find a lot of good movies for under $5. Anyways they had "This Is The End" for $3.99 so obviously I couldn't pass up a deal like that.
It's an okay movie, nothing that great, but I'm a big movie collection guy, if I even kinda like the movie and it's cheap I'll buy it. So when a movie that is kind of funny that is only 3 years old is under 4 bucks you scoop it up. It'd be finically irresponsible to pass on a deal like that. Not to spoil the movie, but at the end when everybody is dead and they are in Heaven guess who comes out to perform in Heaven?
The Backstreet Boys.
Yes Backstreet was back..... Alright.
Kind of ridiculous that it took me this long to just say I've been music binging the Backstreet Boys for a week but I wanted to paint the picture that got me back into this minor obsession because it was really weird to me.
Now as much I dislike a lot of things about my generation, one thing I can really appreciate is how it is not socially acceptable to call people (and I'm sorry for putting his on my blog don't get butthurt) fags for liking stuff that people would say is "gay". Because as a secure straight man, I can openly admit I love a ton of shit that people would say is "suspect" and the Backstreet Boys is definitely one of those things. I also get my eye brows threaded.
But I'm not a teenaged girl in 1999, I'm a 24 year old man in 2016 but I have been listening to the Backstreet Boys NONSTOP for the past week. And if people make fun of me for liking it then they are the hateful ass hole. YOU have to be accepting of MINE choices that you may dislike. It's almost a beautiful thing. I'm just the grown man belting out Quit Playing Games With My Heart in 2016.
Even 20 years after they first broke onto the scene their music still BANGS. I remember my dad having this CD when I was little I remember the cover so vividly. Looking back it's soooo mid 90's.
You've got three MAJOR hits off this CD.
Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)
As Long As You Love Me
And probably Top 3 Song in their catalog, Everybody (Backstreet's Back)
I've listened to each song at least 10 times this weekend. I included all the videos so you can walk down memory lane with me. It's weird I thought I didn't remember my childhood that well, but I can remember all these music videos from being a kid on MTV. Kind of weird I was only watching MTV when I was under 10 years old but hey I guess even my mom knew this music was fire flames.
Then after I start binging, I HAVE to read everything there is to know about these guys on wikipedia. I'd say 80% of all my knowledge is wikipedia based. It legit offends me when people bash wikipedia. Without it I don't know if I'd even still be alive at this point. Basically that's why I was able to graduate both high school and college.
But there are a few facts I learned on WIKI that I want to share:
So yeah, I've been obsessed with the Backstreet Boys for about a week now. I'll give it another week before I'm on to my next binge. I'll leave with a few more awesome songs to get you through the rest of the day. BTW I know this is not their most popular song but gun to my head I think "The Call" is my favorite BSB song. Just one mans opinion.
