Here is the opening paragraph basically gives you everything you need to know
"On Monday, the Narragansett Town Council peacefully passed a previously hotly debated ordinance that would limit the number of unrelated people in a rental house to four, as well as an enforcement ordinance that will change the rental registration form to include listing the maximum number of tenants per unit."
On Monday Narragansett Town Council decided that rental houses can no longer have more than 4 tenants. This move is in reaction to the block party/riot in Eastward two years ago. Which I'll admit was way out of hand. I was working during it but I saw all the stuff on twitter and it was insane. Still this move is absolutely ridiculous but at the same time makes perfect sense because people are stupid and we live in the most overreactive culture in history. Reminds me off all the stupid changes school administers make every single day to appease the vocal minority.
For those of you who don't know, Narragansett is the next town over from URI and thousands of students live in off campus rental properties in the town during the school year. Mostly in Eastward Look but there are other college spots in town, mainly Bonnet Shores and in the Pier. I lived in a rental house my first senior year in Bonnet and we never got in any trouble, you could argue that was because we were pussies and never had parties but that's for another day. You can blame friend 1 from my graduation recap blog for that. I'm just saying not everyone that gets a rental house is a scumbag.
This move just makes absolutely no sense to me. Basically if you own a 6 bedroom house you can only have 4 people living there. I'm no math major but let's just say rent is $500 a month that means the owners of these houses are going to lose $1000 a month for the 7-8 months people rent, anywhere from 7 to 8 grand, and thats just for this example. Could be even more money for some. Especially to people who own multiple properties. It's such a fucking overreacting that literally doesn't even change the problem. So if some house had 3 or 4 kids living there they're less likely to have partaken in that party/riot? That's what I don't understand, an end of year block party got a little out of hand so now TWO years later we're gonna fuck the people who own the houses these idiot college kids lived in. Don't get me wrong, I hate URI kids too a lot of the time but for the most part they are a necessary evil. Narragansett is a small beach town that absolutely dies when it isn't summer. The town needs the money generated from college kids. They buy stuff at our stores, restaurants etc we need that money. It sucks because a lot of them are out of state hardo frat kids but at the end of the day their money is still green.
I'm just confused, we still live in America right? With the whole political climate this country is in; where a socialist has a chance to be President, people care more about where people can take a shit than more important things like not having another terrorist attack on US soil it is sometimes hard to tell. How can a town tell it's land owners how many people they are allowed to rent houses to? Idk I'm not a smart man when it comes to shit like this but idk how that can be legal? I understand that day was a pain in the ass, cops had to clean up all the broken glass and shit, but there has to be a better way to fix the problem than screwing over all the rental property owners in this town.
