Thanks to too much snow in Buffalo we've now got three straight days of playoff double-headers. Maybe it's because I have Monday off thanks to the late great Martin Luther King, Jr., but I actually love this change. Now I don't have to worry about waking up for 1 pm on Sunday!!!! I mean, I probably still will, but it's nice to get a little more wiggle room. As a hashtag good guy, I feel for you if you somehow don't have a Federal Holiday to celebrate the life of a civil rights leader that was (likely) killed by the CIA, but it's Steelers-Bills. I'll get to that game later, but it's a 2-7 matchup and the 7 is missing their best player. It's not like they're putting Rams-Lions at 11 am on Tuesday. I need to get this blog out in time so 13 people can read it before kickoff! Let's look at the SUPER Wild Card matchups. If you've interested in seeing how well I've done in years past they're right here. Super Wild Card Saturday AFC: 4:30 p.m. (ET) (5) Cleveland Browns at (4) Houston Texans (NBC) Houston's back in their Saturday afternoon Wild Card Game home way sooner than anybody expected. They're hosting the 11-win Browns, who won IN Houston (without C.J. Stroud) on Christmas Eve. DeMeco Ryans will probably win Coach of the Year, and C.J. Stroud, by default, may already be the best Ohio State QB in NFL history. Cleveland's back in the playoffs for the 2nd time in four seasons and the third time in the 21st century, and damnit, they deserve it. #1 defense, more casualties than G@z@. Joe fucking Flacco may have saved their season. Who would've guessed they're the only Ohio team in the playoffs? I hated Ravens Flacco, but I love Cleveland Joe and want him to lead the Browns to the Super Bowl. That would be one of the coolest stories of all time. Talk about an awesome narrative. His career looked O-V-E-R. Damar Hamlin's not the only guy who came back from the dead. IMO, Flacco should be CPOY. To me, it's all about Joe. Can he protect the football? Cause if so, the Browns are dangerous. Njoku's looking like 2011 Gronk with Flacco. Amari Cooper's been eating (but banged up). Jerome Ford's done a noble job in Nick Chubb's absence. Credit to the Texans for returning to the dance, but I love the Browns in this spot. If they survive today, the Ravens should be V worried. Kevin Stefanski gets his first real playoff win (he had Covid in their win over the Steelers in 2020). Browns 24 Texans 20 AFC: 8:10 p.m. (ET) (6) Miami Dolphins at (3) Kansas City Chiefs (Peacock) T's and P's to anybody without a Peacock sub, but this is what you get living in a capitalist society!!! If you think this is the last time you'll see a playoff game behind a paywall, you are sadly mistaken. I'm sure Prime will find their way to finagle a way into broadcasting a playoff game, but I'm pretty excited for this matchup—Miami's #1 offense (yards) vs. Kansas City's #2 defense. We've got a potential Ice Bowl 2.0 with not nearly the same stakes but plenty of narratives!! Did you know Tyreek Hill used to catch passes, return kicks, and abuse children while donning a Kansas City Chiefs uniform? You may have heard that despite winning the Super Bowl without him last year, the Chiefs sure could use Tyreek this year. They've dropped more balls than a state full of 7th-grade boys, making Mahomes look like a mere mortal with stupid hair. The weather worries me for both teams, but Pacheco and his choppy steps will love it. I don't know what to think about this matchup. The weather is the ultimate wild card on this Super Wild Card Saturday night. Tua is terrible in the cold, and this game has a chance to be like Ice Bowl cold. These Chiefs stink, but with Patrick Mahomes, you're never out of it. Miami has never lost a playoff game to Kansas City, and even though that stat means nothing for this matchup, I'm sticking with it. I could see a few balls bouncing off Chiefs' hands and turning into interceptions. Miami pulls off the upset. Dolphins 26 Chiefs 23 Super Wild Card Sunday NFC: 4:30 p.m. (ET) (7) Green Bay Packers at (2) Dallas Cowboys (2) (FOX) If the Cowboys are ever gonna get back to a Super Bowl or even an NFC Championship Game (they haven't been there since '95), this team is their best chance. They lead the league in scoring and were 5th in points allowed. Dak is playing at an MVP level, CeeDee Lamb's scored in a touchdown in what feels like 40 straight games, DaRon Bland had FIVE pick-sixes and Micah Parsons may be the best pass rusher in the league. Up until last week their kicker hadn't missed a field goal all year! From a narrative standpoint, the Packers seem to always beat the Packers in the playoffs and of course, Mike McCarthy used to coach them. Jordan Love has been sneaky very good this year with a bunch of dudes you've probably never heard of (Jayden Reed is my guy). Sporting a top 12 offense and top 10 defense, this Packer team could make some noise and seemingly has a bright future. While and upset wouldn't shock me. I mean, Mike McCarthy is in charge of the Cowboys, and them losing in this spot would be hilarious, but I think the Cowboys take care of business and low key roll. Cowboys 31 Packers 17 NFC: 8:15 p.m. (ET) (6) Los Angeles Rams at (3) Detroit Lions (NBC) I am terrified for the city of Detroit. I don't know if the stakes of a wild card game have ever been bigger. This is not just a game. This is gonna redefine Detroit. Are they gonna take the next step or lose their first home playoff game in 30 years to their former favorite son? From a fairness standpoint, the Rams just won the Super Bowl and have like 49 real fans. They need this. Detroit needs this like American citizens need universal health care. I'm worried the city may be underwater from all the tears if Matthew Stafford's first playoff win at Ford Field is for the LA Rams. That being said, I think the Rams are primed for an upset. The Lions defense is ass and stud rookie TE Sam Laporta is banged up. Kyren Williams and Puka Nacua have been unexpected stars for the Rams and even though my brain says they're gonna win this game, I don't have the heart to pick against Detroit in this spot. Lions 27 Rams 23 Super Wild Card Monday AFC: 4:40 p.m. (ET) (7) Pittsburgh Steelers at (2) Buffalo Bills (CBS) These are two franchises that I don't like, but I guess I respect them. You have to give it to both of them for making it to this point. The Steelers lost back-to-back games to double-digit loss teams in four days in early December. When they went from 6-3 to 7-7, it looked like Mike Tomlin's impressive .500 or better streak was in jeopardy. Then, with Mason Rudolph of all people, Pittsburgh won three in a row to finish at 10-7 and snuck into the playoffs. Per usual, the Steelers had a great defense in 2023, allowing the 6th fewest PPG in the league. That's why they're here, cause Steelers QBs have COMBINED for 13 touchdown passes. There was a point where the Steelers were outgained in like eight straight games, but they still yielded a winning record. Then there's the underachieving Bills. They were 6-6 at one point, with the point differential of a team that should be 10-2. Josh Allen is a walking turnover (18 INT, 7 fumbles), but when he's taking care of the rock..watch out. Buffalo's won five straight to save their season and somehow get up to the two seed. They're hot at the right time, and as a narrative guy...it terrifies me that they were 6-6. If the Bills can take care of business at home on a Monday afternoon (admittedly weird), they have as good a chance as anybody in the AFC to make it to Vegas. It's gonna be an ugly ass game. If T.J. Watt were playing, I'd like Pittsburgh's chances a little better, but I don't know if they'll have the firepower to keep up with Buffalo. I like that the playoffs have expanded, but these 2-7 matchups haven't been much of a contest to this point. Of course, a 7 seed will eventually win a playoff game, but it's not this game. Bills 23 Steelers 10 NFC: 8:15 p.m. (ET) (5) Philadelphia Eagles at (4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (ESPN/ABC) The Eagles are sinking like lead balloons. From 10-1 to 11-6, now they've gotta go on the road in their attempts to get back to the Super Bowl. These are not your last year's Eagles. Their defense is in disarray, finishing 30th in PPG (clearly the worst of all playoff teams), and while point differential isn't a perfect stat...it tells a decent story with a point differential of +5...this Eagles team isn't nearly as good as their 11 wins would tell you. They're 1-5 in their last 6.
Somebody had to win the NFC South, and Tampa took the division on a tie-breaker over the Saints (who would've been way more fun in the playoffs). Tampa's season has been a roller coaster. They started 3-1, fell to 4-7, and ended up at a respectable 9-8. Baker's played well this season. Only 10 INT, and I'm not being sarcastic. You'll take that from Baker. I don't have high expectations for this game, which means it'll probably be a classic, but it feels like a coin flip. The Eagles beat the Bucs early in the season, but that was a long time ago when the Eagles weren't broken. Whoever wins this game loses in the divisional round, but fuck it, let's go crazy. I'm kinda picking with my heart here cause I wanna hear how Max reacts on PMT (if you don't listen to that pod, you're probably lost af). ***to the tune of "Candle in the Wind*** "Goodbye, Billy B. Though I never knew you at allll."
Well, it's officially over. Bill Belichick is out as HC and GM of the NE Patriots after 24 seasons and SIX Super Bowl rings.
I love that he dropped a Tebow reference in his final presser.
In the upcoming days, we'll see plenty of articles and videos of people debating whether or not this is the right decision for the Patriots, and the truth is we won't know for a couple of years. That's not the purpose of this blog. This post is about appreciating what Bill Belichick meant to the New England Patriots.
On second thought, we miiiight know within a couple of weeks if the next coach has "it." Still, the point remains....outside of me saying right now that I want the Pats to hire Mike Vrabel as their next head coach (it looks like they're going with Mayo); this post is not about speculating who will replace Bill Belichick. I'm paying respect to the best head coach in NFL history. Over the life of DOL, I've been critical of Belichick and some his decisions, but I also know he's one of, if not THE greatest coach in the history of the National Football League. He won games in every way imaginable and accomplished feats (6 Super Bowls, 9 Conference Championships, 24 years with one organization) that will likely never happen again. Of course, having Tom Brady helped, but only a fool would say that it was all him. It wasn't. I hate these debates. Why does it have to be who's more responsible? That's such simplistic bullshit. Tom Brady passed for a whopping 145 yards in Super Bowl XXXVI. Brady didn't have the 2014 Patriots' defense prepared for a goal-line pass in the closing minutes of Super Bowl XLIX with altered NFL history. Brady didn't hold the Rams to 3 (three) points in Super Bowl LIII. I love TB12 and know he's the goat, but despite the importance a quarterback, football is a team game. And who gets the team prepared? The head coach. While I disagreed with a bulk of his personnel decisions in the latter half of his tenure (I'll never get over benching Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl), I know Bill Belichick acted in what he thought was best for the New England Patriots going forward. He earned the right to do it his way. Yes, BB drafted bums like Tavon Wilson, Chad Jackson, Derek Rivers, Jordan Richards, Ras-I Dowling and N'Keal Harry far too high, but he also selected Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Vince Wilfork, Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins, Devin McCourty, Dont'a Hightower, Patrick Chung, Matt Light, Julian Edelman, Stephen Gostkowski, Jerod Mayo, and Matthew Slater. The Brady-Belichick era truly ended when Brady left us for scuzzy Tampa, Florida, but with Bill gone (and this way), it truly is the end of "the Patriot Way." For the first time in my conscious life, the Patriots don't have a coach..and that's just kinda weird. 24 years. 6 Super Bowls. Millions of memories. I know many of you, like me, are feeling a mix of sadness, nostalgia, and perhaps even a bit of anger. I'm like mad and sad it came to this, but "it's a bUsIneSs." It's tough to see such an iconic figure in not just sports but American history leave, especially with all we've been through together (two-BS-gates). It's just heartbreaking to see it end this way. Even in an 4-13 year, there were still gimples of his old greatness. The Bills win was awesome and unexpected AF. There was like a month stretch were a no name defense allowed 10 points or fewer. The Pats beat more teams with a winning record than the Dolphins this year (technically, they could surpass them if they go on a playoff run...but idk with that weather report in KC). Brady might've broken the all-time passing yardage in Foxboro, but he was playing for Tampa. Now Bill is going to break the all-time win record with another team. That sucks. It's a major bummer that all parties couldn't work something out that had them finish their careers in New England. IMO that falls on the shoulders of Mr. Kraft, although all three played a role in the triumvirate falling. Sports no longer dominate my life like they once did, but being a Patriots fan certainly shaped who I am. Coach Belichick is partly responsible for some of my favorite memories. There is no dozonlife.com without him (and many others...but BB played a significant role in my love of sports). I've learned so much from him and regard BB as one of the greatest football minds ever. He taught us the importance of sacrifice for the greater good, blocking out the noise, and simply doing our job. He pissed a lot of people off but couldn't give a shit. He did it his way, and it worked for decades. He was an innovator....the intentional safety vs. Denver in '03. He was crazy for 4th & 2 in '09, but now that type of decision is low key common place. I cannot express my gratitude enough for the incredible ride it was. I feel bad that I'm writing this while mentally and emotionally exhausted; thus, it's not my best work...I'm just tryna get something out in a timely fashion. Bill deserves better! This man helped turn the Patriots from a team that didn't matter to a premiere organization in the North American Big Four. From the time I was in 4th grade until I was 28, the Patriots were the best team in the NFL and a model organization in all professional sports (even with the BS-gates and a TE who murdered people). They made you proud to be from New England. One bad year doesn't erase six Super Bowls and all our fantastic times together. Before Bill Belichick, the Patriots NEVER had a 12+ win season; under him they had a baker's dozen. I'm sad the run is officially it's over, but I also understand it may be for the best. Bill's 72 and we have the 3rd overall pick in a supposedly loaded draft. This pick could alter the Pats' next decade. I hope he doesn't end up coaching a team I hate, but then again...our democracy is on the ropes, the world is on fire and the Celtics are undefeated at home. There are more significant issues to worry about. Unless BB ends up with a New York team or a rival, I'm gonna root for him to get the win record. TBH, even if he ended up with the bum-ass Jets (congrats on your first win against us since Obama was President), I'd wanna see him do well. He's a historian of the game and that with be legendary narrative. Imagine if Belichick led the Jets to their first Super Bowl since man walked on the moon. Last night, I watched this video of Belichick's most savage moments and it made me go down memory-lane biiiig time. It's such a cliche at this point, but Bill can be pretty funny. I'd definitely rather see him calling games or doing more NFL history-type content like he did with the NFL 100 show, but knowing the competitor he is and how close he is to Halas' record..he's gonna coach another team next season. When it comes to who was more important to the Patriots' success, Brady or Belichick, I ask you this. Which wheel is more important for a motorcycle? It only works with the other. Yes, Brady won a Super Bowl with a loaded Bucs roster..but let's see what Bill does elsewhere. It's clear that his players recognize how great he was. Seeing these posts hit ya boi in the feels! Thank you Coach Belichick for everything you did for this organization and region. You are the Paul Brown of the 21st century.
P.S.
I love this from Rhode Island's own Joe Mazzulla.
Double P.S.
I CANNOT wait to watch this. I wonder if they'll do an update now that Bill is out as HC of NE.
Song: not strong enough (live on SNL) Artist: boygenius Album: The Record (2023) I haven't written nearly enough the last few months and when I eventually post my "Top 23 songs of 2023" this will be one (even though Phoebe Bridgers kinda annoys me).
I still don't know what direction I want the Patriots to take into 2024 and beyond. I guess it doesn't matter what I want because they aren't considering my opinion (despite being a key loss for a 1-7 football team and publishing thousands of good blogs read by approximately 47 people per post), but a blind man can see that things are crumbling at One Patriot Place.
Belichick has been on his Wes-Welker-in-Super Bowl-XLVI-swag the last two years because he's dropped the fucking ball. After a free agent-led rebuild and the drafting of Mac Jone and Christian Barmore, 2021 was a delight for Patriot fans (at least until after the Bills MNF game). Even though they got curb-stomped in the playoffs, it felt like they were building something. Then came 2022. Hiring Matt Patricia for Mac Jone's all-important second season was quite possibly the worst decision Bill's made in New England, and let me remind you, he once traded a 2nd rounder for Mohamed Sanu. The domino effect from poor personnel decisions is no joke.
The game's been passing/has passed Bill by for a minute, but the Pats defense was respectable if not flat out good in 2023. Believe me, I'm not super thrilled with Bill as of late, but he's still one of (if not) the best coaches in NFL history...even with his flaws. If you're gonna move on from Belichick, you need to have a solid replacement plan, and who better than one of the best linebackers from the first half of the double-dynasty who's also a pretty damn good coach?
Mike Vrabel has been the scapegoat for the Titan's past two seasons as if he wanted to trade A.J. Brown and personally injured all his players during 2022's from 7-3 to 7-10 disaster. Before a down two years, Vrabel was one of the league's best "young" coaches. He won coach of the year in 2021 after leading the Titans to a 12-5 record and the #1 seed in the AFC (I had Bengals ML in their playoff choke job).
I'm worried that by the time I finish this post, Vrabs will already be hired elsewhere; he will be the biggest name available (until Belichick and the Pats potentially decide to "part ways"). The Titans made a mistake firing Vrabel, and they're getting roasted online as they should. The front office blew up the team and blamed the coach when the team regressed...Sounds like a Republican congressperson.
I mean....look at the QBs this guy coached. Three playoff appearances is a miracle.
Dark, but funny and true.
The Titans are a lower-class organization when it comes to reputation and accomplishments. This team fired Bum Phillips after an 11-win season when they were still the Oilers. From 2009 to 2017, the Titans made the playoffs a whopping one time. Vrabel deserves better. I'd love to see him come home to Foxboro.
Bill Belichick is a coaching God, but all things eventually end. If Vrabel weren't available, I'd be more down with giving Billy one more chance like Biggie, but things have changed. Mike Vrabel is on the market. It's clear he still has a great relationship with the organization. Players love him and want to play for him. I'm as sentimental as they get, but you can't be in the business of sports. If the Patriots are gonna move on from Bill, now is the time. Their man is available (who knows for how much longer?).
GO GET HIM.
Song: What Is Life (1970) Artist: George Harrison Album: All Things Must Pass I've been away from the keys for far too long, but The Doz Man is back with one of my all-time favorite songs to kick off my 2024 blogging campaign. I've been on a huuuuuge George Harrison bender (listening to the same three songs) so far in the new year. Since the live options on YouTube kinda stink, we're going with this "official video" that came out 15 years after George Harrison passed. P.S. I'm giving the loyal DOL readers a little double-dip this Tuesday to compensate for lost time away from the keys. I found this Weird Al cover last week, and he fucking crushes it. tbh Weird Al should go by Regular Al when he plays a non-parody song to get the respect he deserves.
It's important to remember that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. There's nothing stopping you from saving $10-$200 a month by halting your usage of toilet paper. Ladies, I get that you want to rebel against the patriarchy, but ironically, shaved heads are a go-to look of the oppressed. Nobody looks good with a shaved head. Knock it off! I love freedom, but just because you're free to do something doesn't mean it's a good idea.
As the league approaches Week 16, the NFL's third season under the looser uniform number rules is nearly over (In 2023, #0 became eligible for all positions except linemen). Don't get it twisted; I'm not a full-Brady and think this additional variety is ruining the game. I'm all for freedom of expression and love anything number-related that isn't math. It's great that more single digits are in the mix, but some numbers are just flat-out ugly, and that ugliness is amplified when worn by a player where the vibe just doesn't fit. Over time, change gets easier to accept, but for now...these uniform numbers just look fucked up on the football field. Without further ado, I present my choice for the NFL's Top 5 Most Egregious Jersey Numbers.
Honorable Mention: New England Patriots OT Conor McDermott
Unlike the rest of this list, this number is traditionally worn by offensive linemen and looks fine. It's just incredibly fucked up that the Patriots issued #75, ESPECIALLY to a journeyman offensive lineman. I know the Pats haven't officially retired a number since Bruce Armstrong, but Vince Wilfork is one of the best players ever to wear the Flying Elvis. At least Revis wore Ty Law's 24, and Hightower wore Bruschi's 54. Poor Vince is stuck with this bum.
Don't even get me started about the Pats issuing 87, but in a weird way, it's easier to handle in the fugly post-Brady unis.
5. Chad Ryland #37. Kicker. New England Patriots
While researching for this blog, I was shocked to see how few kickers and punters took advantage of their newfound flexibility. Only 4 K/P wear a number above 19. I love that Randy Bullock rocks 46. It fits that goofy bastard, but how are you gonna let a fucking kicker wear Rodney Harrison's number???? And he's not even good! If this guy had a little swag, it'd be like, "Okay, I see you in the ridiculous number," instead, it's on this waste of a 4th rounder. When I think about 37, it's a powerful number. I think of hard-hitting safeties, Shaun Alexander, and fullbacks who crave contact, not kickers who can't hit from 47.
4. Skyy Moore #24. Wide Receiver. Kansas City Chiefs
No this wasn't a pick-6. It was a walk-in touchdown for a,,, **checks notes** wide receiver?? I hate to sound like such a Republican, but 24 is for corners and corners ONLY!
3. Jamal Agnew #39. Wide Receiver. Jacksonville Jaguars.
This one actually makes me the most irrationally upset. 39 is an ugly ass number and does not belong on a WR. Apparently, it's from when he was a corner? I didn't realize Agnew's been in the league since 2017. Damnit...I did research, and it flipped my whole opinion (if only more did that). Now I kind of think it's swag that he wears 39 after changing positions, but fuck it, we're too deep into this blog. That exact reasoning is why I didn't include Cordarrelle Patterson lolol. At least I'm writing today.
2. Jadeveon Clowney #24. Outside Linebacker. Baltimore Ravens.
If Clowney wanted to wear 7 like his days as a 'cock I'd be all for it, but brother you're an OLB/DE, why you tryna look like a corner? It's like a 70 year old guy with jet black hair. You're not fooling anyone. We know it's not natural. 24 is for CORNERS ONLY.
1. Darren Waller #12. Tight End. New York Giants
It'd be one thing if his last name was "Fuck," but no number in football is more linked to a single position than 12 is to quarterback. Of course I'm a tad biased with Brady, but there's Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Aaron Rodgers, and Andrew Luck to name a few. So many great QBs have donned the dozen on their back. IMO, if you don't have a QB wearing 12 on the roster, nobody's wearing 12. Marques Colston always looked off. The Cardinals current punter should be ashamed of himself.
P.S. We all know what number looks great on niche bloggers/key-returners/key-losses in the local paper. Song: Christmas Wrapping (1981) Artist: The Waitresses Album: A Christmas Album I haven't bought a single Christmas present yet and tbh I am not in the holiday spirit on account of the world at large and my broken spirit lol. But that doesn't stop "Christmas Wrapping" from being a holiday season banger. Ya boi loves that sax and frantic song structure!
Everyone reacts differently to celebrity deaths. Some may think feeling genuine loss for someone you've never met is strange, but this one hit me like a ton of bricks. It's a crushing loss.
Last night, I slept at my sister's house since my mom's in town and found out this horrible news as I opened up Instagram on the downstairs toilet and saw Terry Crews' post around 9:30 pm.
My immediate reactions and a later tribute to one of Andre Braugher's best scenes as Captain Raymond Holt.
There are a lot of blind spots in my deep wealth of pop culture knowledge, but I didn't know who Andre Braugher was until I started watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine this summer. Now, only a few months later, I'm devastated by his death. It's so fucking sad. I can't believe he's gone. What an incredible talent and an even better person from everything I had read and watched. He was only 61 years old and leaves behind a wife and four children. **Insert obligatory line about deaths around my parent's ages hitting harder**
Although I was super late to the party, I more than made up for it with the amount of Brooklyn Nine-Nine I watched this summer. It became a comfort show for me. As soon as I finished it, I started it over. Nearly every night, I fall asleep to a YouTube playlist, and the "NINE-NINE" one I curated is a go-to. I cannot recommend Brooklyn Nine-Nine enough if you haven't seen it.
Captain Holt truly is one of my favorite characters from any show I've ever watched. He's my Peacock Avi. The man is an (gay) icon. You can't help but love him (and the entire cast, but Holt was the best. Sorry, Andy, but it was his show).
Holt's growth from a hard-ass robot to everybody's dad was beautiful and important. He's a borderline perfect human animal. His inflections were immaculate. The humor was so absurd and niche and had no business being so funny. He could bring a grown man to his knees in laughter. There are too many hysterical lines to count. I won't regurgitate Wikipedia, but Braugher was much more than Captain Raymond Holt. His career spanned five decades in TV, movies, and theater. In 1998, he won an Emmy for his role in Homicide: Life on the Street. Without Wiki, I knew he was classically trained, which is probably why Holt hits you on many different levels. I will have to dive deeper into his filmography, but I am heartbroken by this news. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.
Rest in Peace, âAndre Braugher. Goodbye, Captain Holt, time to terrorize Wuntch in Heaven.
