Screen shot from the video.
Right around this time last year (September 4th, 2020), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 dropped on PS4 and Xbox whatever. I still play it regularly; I just beat the game with Rune Glifberg, NBD.
Like many people around my age, I grew up on THPS and the growth of "extreme" sports in the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s. For my money THPS, is one of the best video game series of all time (I had it on three different formats....PS, N64 and Gameboy color...and that's not even counting downloading the iOS version in 2011); it's responsible for bringing skate culture to the mainstream and shaping an adolescent Dozo. People who never stepped foot on a skateboard loved that game. Ik it played a massive role in my development (although I did skate, I just sucked and was too scared to go balls to the wall in fear of getting hurt...still wish I tried to drop in Middle School). THPS was much more than completing crazy combos and finding secret tapes, but the music made the game IMO. I remember being in daycare after school playing on a PS1 going fucking nuts whenever "Bring the Noise," or Guerrilla Radio," came on. Everybody talks about "Superman" by Goldfinger as the best song from the soundtrack, but "No Cigar" is my favorite song from the first two games. Last week Tony Hawk and Steve Caballero, along with Mikey Howdon (it's on his YT channel; Mikey and His Uke), former Goldfinger drummer Darrin Pfeiffer and Millencolin bassist Nikola Sarcevic covered the 2000 skate rock classic for no reason in particular other than making a bunch of late 20s-early 30s dudes happy for like three and a half minutes. Birdman's on lead vocals in a live video that incorporates THPS gameplay, and Steve Cab is shredding a skate-deck guitar for this nostalgic ass cover. Tony's no Jim Morrison, but he holds his own. Enjoy :)
P.S.
I know Andy Mac wasn't in THPS (I always found that odd since he was Tony Hawk's vert doubles partner at the X-Games for YEARS), but 20 years ago today, I made this flip book of him doing a street run at the X-Games and shared that with my favorite skating song on IG.
Double P.S.
Love the pantomiming of a cigar by Tony around 1:55 mark. We're talking AT BEST a C+ effort.
