UMass football coach Mark Whipple has been suspended for one week without pay after comparing the team's performance in its 58–42 loss to Ohio on Saturday to sexual assault, the school's athletic director Ryan Bamford announced Sunday.
Whipple will participate in a mandated sensitivity training program by the university.
On Saturday, Ohio scored on nine straight possessions, setting a single-game record with 664 total offensive yards. Following the game, Whipple criticized the officiating and compared a missed pass interference call to assault, according to The Athens Messenger's Jason Arkley.
"We had a chance there with 16 down and they rape us, and he picks up the flag," Whipple said.
The school announced the suspension Sunday, with Whipple releasing a statement.
"I am deeply sorry for the words I used on Saturday to describe a play in our game. It is unacceptable to make use of the word 'rape' in the way I did and I am very sorry for doing so. It is not a term that should ever be used in the manner I did. It represents a lack of responsibility on my part as the leader of this program and a member of this university’s community, and I am disappointed with myself that I made this comparison when commenting after our game."
I'm not gonna sit here and act like I watched a fucking UMass-Ohio football game and know whether or not the officiating was worthy of the comment that cost Umass Head Football Coach Mark Whipple one weeks pay. I don't even pay attention to real college football. What I am going to do is vent about how fucking ridiculous it is that Mark Whipple is losing a weeks pay for using a figure of speech, and dictionary definition (obvi not the 1st definition) of the word rape.
Hmmmmm....an outrageous violation you say? Perhaps like picking up a penalty flag????????
First before I dive any deeper I'd almost guarantee if the Kavanaugh Hearing wasn't going on this never happens, but in hyper-sensitive America that's just how things are. Longtime figure of speeches will now result in lost wages because people are too fucking stupid to read between the lines and realize words can have more than one meaning. I think Shannon Sharpe should be thrown in jail IMMEDIATELY for this vulgar hate speech in which he references murder. I think despite how despicable of a crime rape is we can all agree murder (which results in the loss of human life) is worse.
I say take away their 1997 and 1998 Super Bowl wins. If you wanna strip the 2000 Ravens too I'm okay with it.
Any sports fan who ever said their team was robbed by the refs should have their house broken into to see what it's really like. I mean what an insensitive piece of racist shit, right? Don't you know that from 2003-2007 3.7 MILLION home burglaries took place in the U.S. alone?
How dare you?!
No longer will history teachers be able to talk about the raping and pillage by Vikings.
I could keep going but I hope you are smart enough to see my point.
Now am I going to sit here and say it was a smart choice of word; obviously not. Because shit like this will happen. Rape is a really shitty, horrible thing that still blows my mind that its such an issue. When you hear that word horrible thoughts come to mind. Depsite my stance here don't think for one second I'm pro-rape, or anti-victim because that is not the case.
I'm so naive that I still can't believe rape is a thing. Just don't rape people, it's really quite easy. In December I'll be 27 with 27 years of not-raping under my belt. Didn't even really have to think twice about it either. And I'd be willing to bet come December 2019 you can make it 28. That being said it might not be the smartest thing to say given the hyper-sensitivity of this country under Trump. I have not heard the clip but I'm willing to bet this wasn't said in malice towards victims of sexual abuse. In a perfect world Whipple would've used a different figure of speech to express his frustration, but at the same time are we really this sensitive (and stupid) as a society that we can no longer understand nuance? It wasn't the smartest thing to say, but how about afterwards you pull him a side and say something like "I know you're upset, but could you try to find another to express your frustration? People are fucking idiots and just hearing the word rape even though you used that phrase perfectly will set off snowflakes" something like that. You know... how UMass people speak?
This happening at UMass surely doesn't help Whipples case. The most lib of the lib. No room for taking the side of the coach. If one person is offended it's off with your head! I bet Ponchontas Warren wants Whipple dead.... but did anybody even realize this happened until UMass made a big deal out of it? With all due respect, it's UMass football we're talking about and it was on a radio interview. What did maybe 46 people hear this live? Who actually was out there listening and immediately thought Whipple was pro-rape or doesn't sympathize with victims?
It's football coach after a loss. It's not like when he walked off the field he was like I'm have to squeeze in this line. I'm pro-rape and gotta let the people know. That didn't happen. It was a figure of speech that has been used by coaches since leather helmets.
This is like when Michael Scott called a Press Conference after the Watermark.
If UMass does nothing nobody knows this story at a national level and rational people like me don't have their blood pressure elevated by the stupidity of man. Oh I'm sorry for using man, I shouldn't said person. Excuse me. That after all is the biggest issue facing our nation.
Stories like this just make my skin crawl and make me hate the education system as a whole because they are the ones most guilty of crimes against intelligence like this one. I'm not some MAGA guy but don't these pussy, crybaby, libs realize shit like this is exactly why Trump won? The PC police are ruining this country and pissing people off. Fuck your feelings and safe spaces. What happened to stick and stones? If you don't think there's people who voted for Trump just to stick to cry baby snowflakes you're Stevie Wonder blind.
Now if you wanna fire your coach for sucking at his job and giving up 58 (dozahhh) points to the fucking Ohio Bobcats go for it, but to take significant money out of this man's pocket and force him to go to BS sensitivity training for using a common phrase used by coaches than you might as well get your Trump 2020 shirts now because that's the long run impact from ridiculous moves like this. #freethewhipple.
