So today is April 20th aka 4/20 which is like Christmas for stoners. I hate how overblown it is, but that just for another day. I have nothing against smoking weed, but just smoke and STFU. Nobody cares that you blow trees. It's 2016, everybody smokes weed. It's basically legal now anyways.
Today snapchat tried to be hip and added a Bob Marley filter. Snapchat filters are wicked popular right now where you can add an effect to your pic. They are ever changing, snapchat updates them just about everyday. They're one the biggest changes and innovations to happen with snapchat, and they can actually be kind of funny sometimes.
When I saw the Bob Marley filter I didn't think twice but that's because I have a brain and understand what they're trying to do, in a way honor the man. I think it's kind of stupid to just lump Bob Marley in with what 4/20 and I'll get into that in the end of this post. It's just a snapchat filter that is supposed to be fun and topical.
But since it is 2016 and you can't fucking blow your nose without offending someone.. People love to just put a blanket over everything nowadays instead of actually having a conversation and debating, they just say nope you're racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/a bigot etc. You're a" bigot" if you hate extreme terrorists who are Muslim. I don't hate them because they're Muslim, I hate them because they kill tons of innocent fucking people. You're sexist if you think Women's basketball sucks. Maybe people just don't find it entertaining? Not everything in life is black and white there are grey areas. Use your brain!!!! What I'm saying isn't exactly rocket science. Not everything is racist, sexist, or homophobic. Jeez.
PC loser twitter called the Bob Marley filter blackface and racist, they made it seem like snapchat had an Al Jolsen in the Jazz Singer filter. THIS is blackface, it's like a cartoon depiction of black people and is not okay. It is racist and I'm totally cool with people getting offended by this:
On snapchat there have been filters that turn you into dogs, pandas, evil bunnies, truck drivers, cops, hippies, an angel, the devil, Ben Franklin on the $100 bill, a person with mouths for eyes, a person with hearts for eyes, a person with more than two eyes and even a damn tomato. There has been filters that put a baseball cap on your head, and sunglasses on your face. Theres been filters that do face swapping, face shrinking, face enlarging, crazy makeup, and whatever the hell this is:
Is Blackface racist? Yes and I'm not a pro black face guy, it's never a good idea. It's outdated, you're gonna offend a ton of people, we've advanced as society and know it's bad.
As a history buff (I majored in it like an idiot), and someone with a functioning brain, I actually know the background about blackface. Performers used to use blackface to imitate black people and make fun of how they act, very stereotypical portrayals in the turn of the century vaudeville type shows. That shit is racist AF. I have a problem with that stuff. They'd also do in other performances because they wouldn't allow black people to perform, so they'd use white people in black face to act black. Very similar to how hundreds of years ago men used to play women's roles in theatre because women weren't allowed to act. It's called "boy player" look it up. I'm sure a lot of the people who are "offended" by blackface don't know the history and instead just jump on the "enlighten bandwagon" so they can get fake praise on social media.
I do think it is kind of bullshit that black people or other races can dress up as white people and it's deemed hilarious (and often is) when they too are making fun of white people for how they act. But I get it, black people have gone through a hell of a lot worse than white people in the nation's history so it's kind of like a trade off. But if we're being transparent which PC twitter and social media is trying to do than shouldn't it be considered racist for black people or any other group to make fun of white people with white face? But here is the thing, it's a JOKE and is meant to be funny... and because I'm not a loser and can appreciate when something is funny, I can laugh at it. Dave Chappelle as Chuck Taylor the white news anchor is hilarious.
I personally think nothing should be off limits in comedy, it's comedy for a reason, it's not serious. A major part of comedy is the social commentary of life and making fun of people and the way they are. Jokes are supposed to be inappropriate at times, that's why they're jokes!
I just do not think at all this filter is coming from a place of ignorance, hate or ill will like true blackface. It's just a filter making you Bob Marley because it's 4/20. Does it make your face black? Yeah, but it is not blackface. There is a difference between THIS
The Bob Marley filter is just like any other stupid filter on snapchat. It's supposed to fun. Look here's a picture of me as Panda. Here's a video of me where I'm throwing up a rainbow. Here's another picture of me as Bob Marley with Three Little Birds playing. It's the same thing. Not everything in the world is bad. Lighten the fuck up. How can you look at that picture and then immediately think OMG how could they do this it is so offensive? I genuinely do not understand how there are people that think like that. Life isn't that bad yet there are people who get offended by literally everything, there is no pleasing them. These are the worst people on earth. RELAX DUDE! With shit like ISIS and other terrorist attacks seemingly every month now there a lot bigger things to worry about than a damn snapchat filter.
If you're gonna get offended about anything, get offended that people are only remembering Bob Marley for the fact that he smoked weed. He is a musical LEGEND, easily top 20 most important people in music history. Bob Marley was also a huge political and human rights activist. He wrote songs that truly mattered and had deep, intellectual meaning. While I think getting offended is stupid, I can at least understand the merit for being properly remembered, if you're gonna get on your soapbox, get on it for that. It'd be like If you remembered Winston Churchill just for being a heavy drinker and not for all the good he did for the world. That analogy may not be perfect but I hope you can get my point. The filter may be stupid in the sense that is belittles Bob Marley just to a dude who smoked weed, but is not racist.
I'm sure this post will offend people because again people love to be offended, it's like they want to be offended and because I'm a middle class white guy they'll say I can't have an opinion or I'm automatically wrong because I'm white. The Bob Marley filter is not done maliciously or racistly like true blackface from 100 years ago was done. If you can't make the difference between the two things then you are a dumb person.
So instead of calling me a racist after reading this which I am not, instead why don't we talk like civilized people and share our opinions like adults?
