Former Mayor of Toronto Rob Ford passed away today at 46 from a battle with Cancer.

Most Americans know him from the press he got a few years ago for drug problems and his big goofy personality but I just wanna pay respect to a guy who from what I've read was actually a good politician despite some other issues.

• TTC as essential service: At the first regular meeting of council and fresh off an election win, Ford successfully saw council request the province declare the Toronto Transit Commission as an essential service to prevent further labour disruptions. The province stopped strikes by or lockouts of TTC workers the following year.

• Vehicle tax: That first meeting also saw council back another of Ford’s campaign pledges, voting strongly in favour of scrapping the $60 vehicle registration tax, a move which, when taken in 2011, represented a loss of revenues totalling $64 million annually.

• Privatizing garbage collection: After promising to contract out garbage collection citywide, Ford claimed victory for contracting out just one west-end district when council approved that move in 2011. The first contract was awarded to Green For Life later that year.

• Subways: Ford’s ongoing mission to put all new transit underground served up one victory in October 2013 when council voted to scrap plans for a fully funded LRT in Scarborough and build a three-stop subway instead — a decision that cost the city at least $75 million in lost work. Today, plans have changed again to a one-stop subway that’s still being debated at council.

Cancer fucking sucks and has impacted all of us in some way or another. Whatever you think about Rob Ford he was still someone's dad, son and husband. 46 is way too young to go.
