Advertising as always been something that really interested me.
Mad Men is one of my all time favorite shows. I love Don Draper. I've seen at least 150 commercials in my lifetime......don't wanna exaggerate. Looking back I kind of wish I majored in marketing during college. My huge brain is full of ideas and I think I would have been great at it.
One thing that I've always found kind of weird though is how much money major beer companies like Budweiser spend on advertising. Anheuser-Busch will spend like 25 million dollars on Super Bowl ads.
Idk I feel like something as huge as Budweiser doesn't need to advertise so much. Booze kind of sells itself. They have a pretty huge, loyal fanbase. I feel like a stupid commercial isn't what is going to make someone buy Bud Light over Coors Light. But what do I know, I didn't major in marketing I bet some sophomore could explain to me in 30 seconds why they do but that's besides the point.
I say all this because in my 24 years of life I've been a loyal Bud Light consumer for nearly a decade. The ads didn't matter because that was my drink of choice for getting drunk. I like the taste and it's not expensive, no ad for Miller or Coors is gonna take me away from Bud. Don't get me wrong, I like higher quality beers too, but if you're drinking a lot of beer in a short period of time whether it be partying, playing drinking games or something else you're not gonna crush a ton of heavier, higher quality beers. Idk anybody who drinks 17 Sierra Nevada's in a night or play beer pong with Guinness. Those are a savage moves.
Bud Light in recent efforts to I guess appeal to Millennials (worst generation ever btw, so ashamed to be a part of it) have hired Seth Rogen and Amy Schumer to lead their new "Bud Light Party" campaign. In an election year Anheuser-Busch is claiming that our divided nation needs Bud Light to unite. For the first time ever an ad is turning me off from Bud Light. Ironically it's their own ad and I'll explain why these commercials are driving me insane.
I feel like they hired these two just to try to be "cool". But Bud Light doesn't need to be cool, it's Bud Light.
First off Fuck Seth Rogen. Actually first off if I'm Amy Schumer theres NO WAY I let this picture see the light of day. She looks AWFUL in it.
...So back to fuck Seth Rogen.
I'll be the first to admit I love a lot of his movies, he's been in a ton of classic comedies. But outside of his movies he's kind of a giant ass hole. Not gonna spend too much going into it, but google him or search some old tweets and you'll see what I'm talking about.
I don't believe for one second that Seth Rogen is a Bud Light drinker. I'm sure they're paying him a good chunk of cash to do these ads. But there's no way he's a Bud Light guy. Seth is a douchy, pretentious, Canadian, liberal, stoner. That is not Bud Light's demographic at all. You can be like two of those things and be a Bud Light guy, but not all of them. If there's one thing I'm good at it's stereotyping and judging people and I can tell Seth Rogen is not a Bud Light guy. His personality off camera just screams that he's the type of guy who would bash Bud Light. He'd look down his nose at people who like it and say it's shit beer/like drinking water/piss.
Seth Rogen is definitely an IPA guy who hates big beer like Anheuser-Busch. But as I said, money talks so here he is. To me it just doesn't work. From all the stuff I learned about marketing from Mad Men I know that if your ad isn't believable by having the wrong people it isn't gonna work. You wouldn't have The Rock selling Just For Men.
So why is Seth Rogen pitching me Bud Light? I'd bet my life or something even more important, like my iPad that before he was getting checks from Budweiser that Seth Rogen has said he hates Bud Light.
Idk maybe the general public is dumber than me (they are) but when I first saw Seth Rogen in a Bud Light commercial it blew my mind because the first thing I thought was there is no way Seth Rogen drinks Bud Light.
Now with Amy Schumer I've just had enough of her. She can be funny at times, I liked Trainwreck a lot, but can we stop acting like she's the greatest thing alive? Just because she's a woman in comedy doesn't mean she deserves all the attention. All she does is throw in some wicked raunchy details to a story (which is such low hanging fruit) she's telling and it makes her the next Richard Pryor. Amy Schumer is overrated AF but because we live in the United States of PC we have to act like she is God's gift to comedy just because she has a vagina. Amy Schumer has been huge the last year or so but to me it is undeserved.
I wrote this blog because I feel betrayed that Bud Light would hire these two people to be the face of Bud Light. You gotta know your audience. The commercials are AWFUL, pandering like you read about and why too many forced unfunny jokes.
I hate Ronda Rousey too. Was so glad when she lost.
I'm not drinking right now because of this diet I am on but believe me I will be back again someday. As I said I love Bud Light but these ads actually piss me off so much that they may make stop drinking Bud Light. Thats literally the opposite of what you want an ad to do. So to my friends at Bud Light, don't try so hard, cast more likable celebrities and don't try to change for loser millennials.
You're Bud Light. Remember that.
The race for the Republican nomination for President has been a circus for months. It's not even politics anymore it's a free for all pissing match. The latest story is a cheating scandal by the Texas Senator Ted Cruz broken by The National Enquirer.
I didn't even know the National Enquirer was a real source now, I always thought that it more like the onion and just had ridiculous fake stories. I don't read that stuff though (or anything) but I guess now they break news? I don't know how much stock you can put into something they write. I can remember being a kid at the grocery store and I'd see the headlines they'd always be ridiculous and clearly lies so I'm not gonna trust the National Enquirer on this unless more concrete evidence is released.
That being said I haven't read that much into the story but here are the basics. It seems like Cruz has had at least 5 mistresses. Again who knows if this claim has any substance.
One of whom is a known Trump supporter.....now things are getting interesting..
This race is just a complete joke though.... candidates were basically calling each other out for having small dicks, and wives are getting involved now. Donald Trump basically just sent out tweet saying my wife is hot and your's is gross. Could you imagine this happening even four years ago in the 2012 race?
Idk a ton about politics but I feel like this isn't politics anymore. It's getting so out of hand, these people are in a race to be PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. You couldn't pull this shit in a class president race in some random high school.
I've heard that a private investigator was hired to get dirt on Cruz. My main guess is that Trump probably is behind this to eliminate his biggest roadblock to winning the GOP ticket. Theres obviously nothing sacred in this race and everything is fair game. At first I thought it was kind of funny a few months ago but now it's ridiculous. The election is like 7 months away.
All I have to say about this though is if it is true, good for Ted Cruz. Yeah, cheating is a very scummy move and I don't support that at all. I hate cheaters and have no respect for them at all...... BUT have you seen what Ted Cruz looks like?
If you were describing Ted Cruz you could probably say 10,000 words before you say "handsome".
The dude is just not a great looking guy. While I hope this claim isn't true just for the sake of his wife and kids. If it is that pisses me off because as I said I hate cheaters. But at the same time as a man I gotta give Cruzer some credit for finding multiple women who would have sex with him.
I'm a bigger guy who some may even call ugly so I know how hard it can be to get girls in that spot, my stat sheet could be written on a fortune cookie.
I think the biggest part of this story should be that fact that Ted Cruz was able to pull at least 5 women. I know he has a very powerful job which helps but still the dude looks like Kevin Malone for God sake. Looks do matter. No women is fantasizing about sleeping with Ted Cruz. I'm just not gonna shit on an ugly guy for getting laid, I just can't do it, it goes against everything I stand for. So congrats on the sex Ted.
People may say these actions, if true will kill his campaign because these are not Presidential actions. I on the other hand think it makes him even more qualified to run the country. With how crazy this race has been I bet this will help his chances. Even though I majored in history, I don't know a ton about history, one thing I do know is that many Presidents have stepped out on their wives.
and of course the GOAT.
All I'm saying is lets not assassinate Ted Cruz's character just yet when this story is from a rag. And if it does turn out to be try, don't look down on the guy, give that ugly bastard a little credit for making the best of what he's got. With all the bull shit that has gone on this race that this is probably one of the more presidential moves a candidate has done yet. Still think all the candidates from both parties are awful but in a weird way I think this move could help Ted Cruz.
Any chance there is to post a crying Jordan face I'm going to capitalize on it, just who I am, its the one thing on the internet that will always be funny. Last week Ben Carson dropped out and tonight Marco Rubio is doing the same.
After losing his home state of Florida to Donald Trump tonight Marco Rubio aka Little Marco ended his campaign to be POTUS. The son of a bartender (one of the few things I can remember him saying in the debates) is calling it quits after not getting the support of his own state. Brutal to not even get their support.
I've made it pretty clear that I'm not a huge politics guy. I don't like any of the candidates left. But I have been making a conscience effort to try to follow it a little more. Thats mainly because of Trump though. Yeah I know he's crazy, and being in liberal Rhode Island I'm sure I'll get shit for thinking his whole ordeal is hilarious. But love him or hate him you can't deny he's making politics much more interesting. Trump's son straight up murdered Rubio on twitter after the news he's suspending his campaign.
I said on the first episode of the Three Man Parlay podcast (CHECK IT OUT) that Marco Rubio couldn't be president strictly because of the name Marco and it turns out I'm right.
Whenever I hear Marco I immediately think of Marco Polo.... who I guess was an explorer. As a person with a history degree I should probably know more about him but I don't. I just think of the game you play in a pool. He may be blind, may not be, but you can't have a president that has the same name as blind explorer who's greatest legacy is kid's game. Whenever he was introduced and they'd say Marco before the announcer could shout out Rubio I'm shouting out Polo. Thats just in my DNA at this point can't change that. Anybody with the same name as a game or tv show character from my childhood just can't be President. So anybody named Simon (Sez), Clifford or Barney you're shit out of luck too for getting my support as President.
Plus you can't have a male President who wears high heels. Big red flag IMO. It might not matter for his policies but at the same time it definitely does. Any man who thinks its better to wear lifts than just own the fact that they aren't tall is a mentally weak man who shouldn't be the leader of the free world. Marco is 5 foot 10 which is a totally respectable height but still wore these shoes, maybe they're stylish, maybe not idk. IMO can't have a President trying to over compensate like this. Deep down he's insecure about his height and I don't want an insecure President.
So peace out Marco. You might not think it now but you're lucky. I've said it before President is the worst job on Earth. No matter what at least half the country hates you. Plus I think you only make like 400K a year, totally not worth all the stress. Can't be making less than 7th round pick in the NFL.
I have no idea what is next for Rubio, I've heard rumors of him being Cruz's potential running mate but that might not be true, I may have just made that up but I'm pretty sure I read it on twitter. Just enjoy that Miami weather, your wife (former Miami Dolphins cheerleader) and just pray your ears stop growing.
Now I just want to preface this post by saying I'm not a Republican or Democrat. I have tended to lean more left in the past but I truly believe no sane person can be 100% one side or the other. Both parties have principles I agree with.
That being said, it was about time Ben Carson dropped out of the race. It was starting to get embarrassing. You'd think not having any screen time during a debate would be a pretty good hint this isn't going to work out for you.
It was highlighted during the last debate when he basically begged to be attacked just so he could get some face-time.
I didn't even realize he was there until he complained again about not having questions directed at him.
Now he has officially ended his campaign.
Ben Carson never had a chance to win the GOP ticket.
Ben Carson being present at the last few debates with no chance in hell of giving the ticket (or even winning one caucus) was a waste of everybody's time like the last few games of an NFL team's schedule after start the season 1-9 and you know they aren't making the playoffs even though they technically may not have been mathematically eliminated yet.
Being President sucks no matter what half the country (at least) is going to hate you, if I was you Dr. Carson I would be excited, I'm guessing you're filthy rich, go enjoy that money bro.
But it's over, your dream is dead.
***Now as an middle class white guy I might not have the best grasp on the whole controversy and do not mean to upset anybody.***
With the Oscars about to begin I have to address the whole "Oscars so white" controversy that has lead up to the awards. Due to the lack of nominations for black actors or actresses many people have complained about a lack of diversity from the academy. There is no denying there has been a lack of diversity in the past with only a handful of African American actors and actresses bringing home statues in the history of the award. You can't argue that, the majority of award winners have been white.
But my question is simply this? What if there was just no black people who were truly deserving of nominations this year?
As someone who went to school for education I know very well how much people want more diversity with everything in life. I personally think diversity just for the sake of it is stupid, and that people who are most deserving of whatever the award/position is should receive it. If I'm getting brain surgery I want the best man or women available for the job, idgaf if they are white/black/asian/latino/man/woman/gay/straight. I want the person who is going to give me the best chance of survival. For the same reason I think the Rooney rule in the NFL is a joke, and frankly pandering, say a team has a guy they know they want to hire, why should they interview a minority that they know they aren't going to hire? To me that is more offensive.
Diversity and equality are good ideas but at the end of the day it should be who is the best. Do people complain that the majority of the NBA is made up of black men? They shouldn't, because they have shown they are the most qualified for that position. Sports I think are really the great equalizer when it comes to race because 99.9% of coaches today don't care who you are, if you're the best you're on the field/court/rink.
Did Cam Newton win NFL MVP this year because he is black? No, he won it because he very successful on the field and was most deserving of that honor. Aaron Rodgers, who is white, won NFL the year before for the same exact reason: he was most deserving.
Now I think, especially in 2016 if there are people who are deciding things that are holding prejudices based on race/gender etc. that they should be removed immediately. I don't think it should matter who you are. It shouldn't matter, if someone is better than you at a job they should have it. I just personally think the people are most deserving for things should receive them. I fucking hate pandering, it makes my blood boil. I don't understand why expressing that in today's society is considered a hot take. Sadly that is what society is full of today, people doing things disingenuously for fake approval of others. That's basically all twitter is now for example.
If one year there are 4 black and 1 white men who "earned" nominations for best actor than thats how it should be in my opinion. If another year its all white or all black guys or any combination of any group of men or women then they should be nominated, its that simple. Isn't simply nominating someone just because they are black or latino or whatever with no legit chance to win just as "offensive"?
To me I honestly think it is just bitterness. Mainly over Straight Out of Compton not getting any major nominations or Will Smith not being nominated for Best Actor for "Concussion". Especially with Smith's wife boycotting. I think it is just petty. Newsflash.... Straight out of Compton simply was not the best picture put out in 2015 and Concussion sucked. Will Smith didn't deserve a nomination and it is not because he is black. I watched that movie and it was a snoozefest, just because he had a horrible fake accent the whole time does not mean he deserved to be nominated. If he or any other African American actor or actress had done an outstanding job and deserved to win or at least be nominated and weren't then I would 100% understand the outrage. Could Straight Out of Compton been nominated for Best Picture? Probably. I already think that award is wicked watered down already. A few years ago it used to just be five nominees and now its closer to 10, so what does adding one more movie with no chance of winning do? Again to me that is pandering and stupid but to each there own. Just because there may or may not have been a ton of diversity this year does not mean that there never is or never will be in the future.
What really surprises me of all the outrage is the recent success African Americans HAVE had at the Oscars. It is not like no African Americans have won or been nominated recently, if that was the case I would definitely understand the outrage more. Lupita Nyong'o, Octavia Spencer, and Mo'Nique all have won Oscars for Best-Supporting Actress since 2009. Chiwetel Ejifor was nominated for Best Actor two years ago. Selma, the story of MLK's march was nominated for Best Picture just last year.
I may offend you but I'm sincerely not trying to, I've said it throughout this post and truly believe it with anything in life. The most deserving people should be recognized for whatever it is in their specific field. Maybe this year there were no African Americans who warranted nominations, I really don't think they were not nominated simply because of race, and I sure hope that that was not the case. I hope in 2016 and going forward the most deserving people are recognized for their success: whoever they may be.
