What a fucking game!
Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions. Sale started pretty shitty, but given how lights out he's been all year if there's one guy who's allowed have an off night, it's Chris Sale. Going into this start he hadn't given a run in I believe 22.1 innings and am not going to check because I believe in myself. With Chris Sale on the bump you don't necessarily expect to win, but you expect a well pitched game. We did not have the latter, as this was easily his worst start as a Boston Red Sox. Chris Sale went just 5 innings allowing 7 earned runs, including a 3 spot in the first inning. Sox are down 5-0 through an inning and half. Tie it 5-5 in the bottom half of the 2nd. Then go down 7-5 in the 5th, could've been a lot worse but Blaine Boyer got out a jam that he put himself in. Sox go up 9-7 in the 6th, Addison Reed gives up a HR to the first guy he faces as a Red Sox, and the lead is cut to one it's 9-8. Then in the 9th Kimbrel gives up a lead off HR and spikes a wild pitch to go down 10-9, should've lost in the bottom of the 9th on a Moreland strikeout but he reaches first. Then Christian Vasquez hits a 2 out walk off 3 run ding-dong and the Red Sox win 12-10. This was easily one of the wildest regular season games I can ever remember in my nearly 15 years as Red Sox fan. To me this could have that July 24th 04 feel where this is the game where the Sox turn it around and start rolling. Went from biggest win of the year, to worst loss, back to biggest win in about 20 minutes. Oh and it also featured maybe the greatest catch ever at Fenway. I feel bad for Hanley, he's been struggling all year and takes the ball for a ride only to fall victim to maybe the best against the wall catch in the 105 year history of Fenway Park.
The Red Sox absolutely needed this game. To comeback from 5-0 to take the lead in the 9th and lose would've been absolutely crushing for this team's psyche considering how mentality soft they've shown to be so far. But all the credit to the world to them tonight, they battled and won a game that looked like they had lost on multiple occasions. Luckily Christian Vasquez (who has been on absolute fire as of late) took matters into his own hands to walk it off for the Sox.
Oh BTW look who's back in first place.
The best thing about the AL East race being so tight right now is that when the Sox are down a half game I can be like "Dude it's only a half game", but when we're in first I'm in full "Fuck you we're in first place" mode.
P.S. This is a HORRIBLE look for Dav-agina Price (that was lame but screw him) given all the shit going on involving him. Probably just worried about that 1 out of 10 hurt elbow.
