During his time in Boston, David Price was the definition of a lightning rod. He definitely didn't do himself many favors, but I still think his time in Boston was a success overall.
After signing a seven year-217 million dollar deal with the Red Sox in the winter of 2015, expectations were sky high. Like a lot of fans, I had my issues with Price at times. I hated how the whole Eck thing was handled. There were instances I thought he had a shitty attitude and that he was kind of soft...but I always said if David Price just performed he would be embraced. I think Price's performance in the 2018 postseason showed that. Real Red Sox fans dgaf about your dog, bro. We want to see the team win. To prove my fairness; I will go to my grave believing David should've been World Series MVP in 2018. Steve Pearce's last homer was like an empty net goal. Price's pitching was more valuable IMO. David is like the lefty John Lackey (minus divorcing his wife while she was battling cancer) in the sense that rings are usually instance forgiveness for being a dick.
As part of the Mookie Betts trade that terminated my Red Sox fandom, David Price is now an L.A. Dodger. As part of a worldwide pandemic shutting MLB down, David Price has never thrown a meaningful pitch in a Dodgers uniform. As part of being a good person, David is paying the Dodgers minor leaguers (who aren't on the 40 man roster) that are getting railroaded by baseball a $1000 out of his OWN POCKET.
If anybody says "So what? He can afford it" then why the FUCK can't the BILLIONAIRE owners pay their players? (Do some research about how poorly the minor leagues are run and how the players are treated) This is a beautiful gesture by David Price. Despite what reports have come out about him as a person...there have always been players quick to defend him saying he's one of the best teammates they've ever had. I think this move just about solidifies that. David knows he can afford to do this and it's the right thing to do... so he's doing it. While he still is a mulit-multi-millionaire this affects his bottom line way more than BILLIONAIRES. He respects the grind. Despite being a #1 overall pick he knows how rough minor league life is. Plus there's plenty of top picks that never see the majors.
Billionaire MLB owners were paying minor league baseball players a whopping $400 a week during Covid; literally less than I was getting from unemployment as a substitute teacher (before that went to hell). Then some owners decided that they couldn't bare to pay that. While the Dodgers have agreed to pay minor leaguers through June, even that is garbage for one of the most valuable franchises in MLB. I've made $400 on 12 hour uber shifts in the winter. How is a player who hasn't even played a game for this organization more caring and empathetic to players than the men who employ them? (Don't answer that) What's going on in baseball right now is scumbag city. The Dodgers are worth over 3 BILLION dollars and they have to be bailed out by a pitcher who for all intents and purposes isn't even really a Dodger yet. Like a lot of problems in society this is just flat out wrong. Baseball agreed to pay players a prorated salary because of the pandemic and now the billionaire business owners are trying to fuck over the players and pay them less than they already agreed upon.
I'll be the first to admit I've said some not so nice things about David Price in the past. He can tell me to go fuck myself and he'd be 100% in the right...but just know Ole Dozo now has your back 100%. David Price is doing a noble thing and it's a shame Major League Baseball has allowed it to get to this point. They really are doing everything they can to alienate fans. Again Bravo to David Price and thank you for all you did in Boston. Sorry so many of us were dicks too.
