I meant to blog this yesterday but didn't get around to it...Look, I've been a Ted Lasso fan since the first episode. It was a breath of fresh air during Covid. I remember seeing the original version of Ted coaching Hotspurs for the EPL ads like 10 years ago. I love SNL, Sudeikis has been my guy since middle school. I even recently praised an episode for being the series' best, but what the fuck was with this PSA bullshit? (great joke though, DJ)
In "We'll Never Have Paris," the episode juggles like a half dozen storylines, one being how Keeley was one of the many victims of a nude leak dubbed "The Great Awankening" in shades of 2014's The Fappening.
Now before the pitchforks come out (jk, that would require people actually reading and discussing DOL blogs), please do not get it twisted. I agree that it's FUCKED up to exploit people's nudes with hacks or revenge porn, even showing people nudes you caught is scuzzy (but I'm guilty), and I think it's super fucked up to blame the person taking the photos when they're the victim. (Jack was a total cu next Tuesday to Keeley, and I hope they're done for good) It's not their fault someone screwed them over. I'm not a scumbag, so I'm pro-consent. I also think this over-the-top, preachy, inauthentic approach was ridiculous and poorly written. I hate book burners who want to rewrite history, so when it comes to nudies, IMO, once they are sent to you, they are yours forever. If you want to delete them after a breakup, go for it. If you want to hold on because you never know what may happen or perhaps the fact that someone used to be so into you that they'd send you those kinds of pics helps you remember a better time in your life and gives you hope to keep going, I say go for it. Issac is always kind of extra with his tough guy persona, but his approach to this topic was fucking wack and unrealistic in this situation. Everybody just went along with it? You've got a better chance of me transferring my entire bank account to you than getting me to delete all the pictures in my phone. He says, "delete all the pictures and videos you've ever been sent, now." You could assume he's just referring to nudies, but it also sort of feels like he's saying delete everything and, if that's the case, over my dead body. Dude, it's 2023. Sure, I bought a picture frame at Target yesterday when my sole purpose was to get some new sheets, but do you know where those two 5x7s are gonna come from? My fucking iPhone. That's most people's only camera and if they have another it's probably on a laptop. Asking someone in 2023 to delete all their pics is like asking someone before like 2009, to burn all their family photo albums. He wasn't talking just nudes; he wanted them to delete everything. Issac is that type of dude. I know Colin avoided it because he didn't want people to find out he's gay, but I still respect him for standing up to this fascist bullshit. Sam saying he gives his phone to his ex to delete whatever she wants is psychotic. I get it was a shitty attempt at humor, but that's how you end up getting Candy Crush deleted, and if someone deleted Candy Crush off my phone, it's on fucking sight. I'm what ignorant people may call "a woke pussy," so I don't have a problem with shows having a deeper message peppered into the dialogue, but to call this scene "dialogue" would come back as a lie on a polygraph. I'm all for trying to make the world a better place, but your first job as a TV show is to entertain. I've seen articles bashing this season of Ted Lasso, saying it's not funny anymore or complaining about the run times (how stupid can you be??), and I disagree. The show has certainly evolved, but there's still plenty of humor. Like Beard's line to Mae about not wanting to fucking be there (at the West Ham match) was delivered perfectly, and I'm not the biggest Beard guy, so you know that's genuine praise. All these past few preachy, after school special-y episodes have taught me is...Ted Lasso cannot end after this season. There's still so much meat left on the bone. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this show's cast is so solid it could survive without the Ted Lasso character. There's been peaks and valleys this season, but it'd be crazy to pull the plug now with how successful this show is. Don't be so quick to look for the next thing. Look at the Chicago Bulls. As the end of The Last Dance said, "they're still rebuilding." I could totally see a world where Ted goes back to America to get back together with his ex wife (it really felt like it was building towards that this last episode---I mean the Dave Grohl pillow reference they both made) Nate either leaves or gets fired from West Ham and replaces him at Richmond. I could also see Roy, maybe even beard taking over for Ted. I saw an article talking about a Trent Crimm spin-off and I'd be game for that too. Really as long as Rebecca is in the next one, I'm cool. I love and respect all women, but I've got a thing for the sexy & strong older ones and Hannah Waddingham is one of the world's most.
P.S.
I hate how AppleTV+ doesn't do previews for next week's episodes. That's probably my biggest complaint with the service (besides the small library, but most of their originals are solid). In the two sentence description for S3E9, it says "Colin and Isaac's friendship is tested. Roy is asked to do a press conference." I'm calling it now, Colin and Isaac's friendship is gonna be tested not by the low hanging "Isaac is homophobic" route, but because Isaac is mad at Colin for not being honest with him. I could see Isaac being pissed that Colin assumed he wouldn't be accepting or something like that.
