In 2013 Kevin Garnett Wanted To Retire and Make a TV Show About Going to College at 36

It turns out Kevin Garnett really considered taking a shot at college life. According to The Vertical's Chris Mannix, who shared Garnett's story on his podcast on Tuesday, the former NBA star pondered the idea at the age of 36 when he almost retired his career after leaving the Boston Celtics in 2013.

Garnett was reportedly on a trip to China with Stephen Espinoza, the head of Showtime Sports at the time, when the basketball star randomly asked whether he should go to college. "I've got an idea for a show. How about I go to college," Garnett, who had missed out on the whole college experience after he went straight from high school to the NBA in 1995, apparently said, according to Mannix. And not only did Garnett want to attend a university, but he wanted to live in the campus dormitories and have Showtime film the entire experience.

Unfortunately, KG never made it to campus, although he was dying to go. Instead Garnett got traded to the Brooklyn Nets in 2013, playing until he left the team to go to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2015, before retiring the following year. It's too bad he never went though, because the Boston area has a lot of great schools to choose from. As far as a reality show on the subject, it probably wouldn't replace VH1's high-rated shows, but it definitely would have been a good source of comic relief.

Talk about your all time missed opportunities by both parties involved. What did KG do in his final 3 seasons in the NBA other than bring down his career points per game average? I love the man but them hanging up after his final year with the Celtics would've probably been the right move. Just wasn't the same guy anymore. And suuuuure Showtime has had their fair share of hit shows but in the entertainment field that's never enough. You know what's better than a million dollars? 100 million dollars. As my future boss, Dave Portnoy claims "content, content, content" and boy were we stripped of some all time content by this KG goes to college show not ever happening.

Could you imagine a then 36 year old Kevin Garnett as a college freshmen moving onto campus? You have a 7 foot tall black dude who played 21 years in the NBA sleeping in a twin XL.  Sharing a 12x 12 room with some 18 year old gender neutral call me "they" hipster and a redneck. Tell me that isn't the most watched tv show of all time?  I think in the tv biz they call that "gold".

Just a bunch of 18 year old brats going away to college to "find themselves" and then you drop in future basketball HOFer Kevin Garnett. Who knows who he'd become in college? What if KG became a huge burnout hippy who wore drug-rugs and played hacky-sack? You're telling me right now you wouldn't watch KG play frisbee with some 19 year old stoner named Kaleb with a K talking about Bernie Sanders?

Maybe he joins a frat. Imagine some 20 year old hardo trying to haze the Big Ticket? I'd kill to see what he'd have to say to some punk ass frat dude who's trying to make him partake in a circle jerk.  Yeah good luck, Anthony, I'm sure that'll go over very well. Imagine watching KG in some bull-shit 100 level history class taking addies and chugging red bull writing papers about the Stamp Act. I've never wanted anything more in my life than this tv show.

From his time in the NBA there's two things we know. The first is that KG is one of the best Power Forwards of all time. IMO he's probably #3 after Tim Duncan and Karl Malone. The second is that he is fucking hilarious. Not only was he a great competitor on the court, like maybe the most competitive dude of all time. But he was also a great shit talker as well. He said things that got in the head's of his opponents but they also were hysterical at times. He's been just as funny interviews off the court.
If Kevin Garnett ever changes his mind and decides to go to college and film it I will be watching.
