The QB carousel has been spinning like a Dead or Alive smash this offseason and if you've blinked in the past month you've probably missed a move or two.
Most recently (I thiiink), Matt Ryan was traded from the Atlanta Falcons to the Indianapolis Colts for a 3rd rounder after 14 seasons, 120 regular-season victories, and the most overshadowed MVP in NFL history. I like Matt Ryan. I medium key fucked with BC Football while I was in high school, and he was leading them to 10 win seasons, highlighted by being one of the "curse of the #2 ranking" teams in 2007. As the quarterback of the Falcons during the most famous single-game choke in sports history, it's easy to paint Matty Ice as a loser, but I think that's unfair. He's the winningest QB in Falcons history by a wide margin and probably a borderline HOFer. If were to win a Super Bowl in Indianapolis, I'd say he's a lock. I forget how long ago 2007 was, so you might've forgotten that while Matt Ryan was at Boston College, he wore #12, which is the most successful quarterback number. Some will say something like that holds no actual meaning on the gridiron, and while that may be true, the data says otherwise. Of the 112 Super Bowl starts made by quarterbacks, only one wore #2, Matt Ryan with the 2016 Atlanta Falcons. He wore that number in high school, but according to a 2014 article on the Falcons website, he didn't choose to rock 12 in college and would've continued with it in the pros had it not already been taken by WR Mike Jenkins.

One of the many great sights on NFL gamedays is watching countless Falcons fans fill the Georgia Dome and away stadiums, wearing the jersey of their favorite player, which got us to wondering if the players have a specific reason why they're wearing the number that is on the front and back of their jersey. Falcons QB Matt Ryan's reason dates back to grade school. It wasn't long after Ryan was selected as the third-overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft that his No. 2 jersey began flying off the racks at local, regional and national sporting goods stores. After all, throwing a touchdown on his very first snap in an NFL game doesn't hurt, a 62-yard strike to former Falcons WR Michael Jenkins in the Week 1 game against Detroit on Sept. 7, 2008. There's another tie-in from that game; Ryan entered the league wanting to wear jersey No. 12, the same number he wore during his brilliant career at Boston College, where he completed 807-of-1,347 passes for 9,313 yards and 56 touchdowns as the Eagles QB. "At BC, they just gave me the No. 12," Ryan said. "I didn't get to choose it. I was going to wear No. 12 here, but Mike Jenkins had it and when they asked me what number I wanted to wear, I said I'd go back to No. 2, my high school number."
I've never liked the number 2, so sure I'm a tad biased, but I'm also trying to help out a seemingly nice guy in a new city. I want to see Matt Ryan do well in Indy, but he's not helping his cause with Wentz hand-me-downs.
Yeah, Carson Wentz was only in Indy for one season, but he made quite the impact during his time and not in a positive way! Plus, it's not like Matty needed to keep #2 for marketing purposes; we know that's not his swag. This was the perfect chance to start over with a new digit. However, since #2 is pretty rare by NFL QB standards, whenever I see that Colts #2, I think of the dumpster fire that is Mr. AO1. Carson Wentz. I'm sure many Colt fans feel the same way.
After 14 years in Hotlanta, Matty should've left #2 in the stadium that looks like a sphincter.
I could be wrong. Perhaps Matt Ryan will play well enough to make Colt fans forget Carson Wentz lost to the 2-13 Jaguars in a win, and you're-in game and had the most empty 27 touchdown season in league history. This felt like a perfect chance for Matt Ryan to rebrand himself.
Now, if he's doing this so Colt fans can recycle their Wentz jerseys with some duct tape or maybe a new nameplate if they know someone crafty, then I commend him for looking out for the simple people of America's heartland. Still, gun to my head, this is a bigger mistake than running a pass out of the gun on 3rd and 1 with Devonta Freeman in pass pro.
P.S.
It's not too late, Matty! 12 ain't retired for Storgi.
Double P.S.
I've never seen Pretty Woman. S/o Kelly Kapoor for the sweet reference.
