The 2013 Red Sox are my favorite champion of all the Boston sports championships post 2000. That may be a hot take but it's how I feel. 2004 was definitely more important but 2013 to me was extra special given the 2012 season and of course the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. The 2013 Red Sox were also full of characters, they had the whole beard thing going on as well, it was also my first Red Sox season as a 21 year old, I could go on for hours about that season but that's not what this post is about.
No in 2013 David Ortiz had one of the funnier moments of his career. Maybe it wasn't funny at the time, but it sure was awesome. If some of that phone case blinded Dustin Pedroia next to him it wouldn't have been funny but luckily that didn't happen. After striking out against the Baltimore Orioles after he thought he had gotten ball 4 earlier in the at bat he took out his frustration on the dugout phone to the bullpen.
Even with his "This is our fucking city" speech, overall great season, and insane post season highlights, when I think of 2013 David Ortiz, this is one of the first images that comes to mind. Just a great baseball moment. I love seeing players react and do crazy shit. It's one of the best parts of baseball IMO.
Anyways, with the final days of his career coming to a close, David has been getting the farewell treatment from other clubs across baseball. I usually hate the gifts that retiring players get as they are usually just a waste that the guy will never use, but this move by the Orioles is A+
I love this for many reasons. First off, it's not some boring cliche gift that all the other teams have been doing, Papi doesn't need bottles of wine or a surfboard.
Nope, instead he gets this gag gift from the Orioles and I for one am all on board. You don't need to give a multimillionaire stupid shit that he'll never use. No, you need to give him the phone he smashed in your dugout. This is actually a hilarious move if it's the actual phone. Still don't know if I 100% believe they saved it for this, but if they did bravo. Actually, if they smashed another phone to give to him that'd almost be even better. I just gotta know. I just think this is good for baseball and if it can start a precedent across baseball to do goofy gag-gifts for retirement tours then I'm all in. The Red Sox and Orioles have had bad blood ever since the O's got good again. Plus technically until this sweep there was a pennant race going on. I don't want rivals being all buddy-buddy. I want troll jobs and this is an A+ troll job by the Orioles. Yeah we basically ended your AL East dreams this week, but thanks for the laugh. Have fun losing in the wild-card game. Oh and as we all know, this wasn't the last bullpen related incident for Papi in 2013.
