Everybody knew it was coming, but yesterday it was made official that Martellus Bennett will not be returning to the Patriots. When they acquired TE Dwayne Allen and a 6th round pick from the Indianapolis Colts for in exchange for a 4th round pick it essentially slammed any door shut regarding the possibility of a year 2 of Martysaurus Rex in Foxboro.
Marty B became a fan favorite in New England due to his production and personality both on and off the field. He's funny, he's smart, and he does a lot of amazing charity work.
After being a problem in the league early in his career it appears Martellus has matured. Really bums me out they couldn't work out a longterm deal just because I like him so much, but as a football move it is the right call.
After losing Gronk to a season ending back injury, Bennett became the Pats #1 tight end. While he wasn't putting up Gronk like numbers, as he too was battling injuries. Martellus stepped in nicely and helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl. Marty wants to get paid, as he claimed immediately after the Super Bowl and have no problem with him going after the cash, he got his ring, now it's time for him to get a big pay day. We all have seen in the NFL how careers can end in a flash and without fully guarantees deals I have no issue with dudes wanting to get theirs while the can. It was a great one year relationship for the Pats and Martellus. Both parties got what they wanted. Patriots got ring #5, Bennett got his first and a chance to show off for a bigger deal which everybody expects he will recieve. I think I can speak for most Patriot fans in saying that I wish he'd be back, but I understand the business and knew the Patriots weren't going to give Marty the 9 million dollars a year he was looking for. After the Pats acquired Allen from the Colts, effectively ending any chance of a return to Foxboro Marty took to twitter to say goodbye to Pats fans.
In his lone season with the Pats Martellus Bennett had 55 catches for 701 yards and 7 TDs. In the playoffs he added 11 grabs for 98 yards. I wish Bennett and Gronk could've both been healthy all season long, it would've been awesome to see what the Patriots could do with those two on the field at the same time, it's a shame they only got to play together for a handful of games.
I wish Marty the best of luck in the future, hopefully he doesn't sign with a team I hate so I can continue to root for him in the future. He won't get the unfollow on twitter and IG if he signs with a team I can tolerate, but if it's Seattle, Baltimore, Denver, either New York Team, Pittsburgh or Indy then I'm hitting that unfollow button. As for Dwayne Allen, I absolutely love the move. Give up a 4th and get a legit tight end and another late round pick. The stats do not tell the story of Dwayne Allen, he's battled injuries and dealt with bad Indianapolis teams the last few years, I expect him to do big things in a Patriot uniform. Plus this tweet he sent out after the deflategate game in 2015 just makes Pats fan love him more already. I think it's going to be a great marriage between him and the Patriots. Just hope he and Gronk can stay on the field, or at least be healthy for the playoffs.
Goodbye Marty :'( Fuck man he's making this hard to deal with. I'm gonna miss Marty a lot.
