TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - It's a word that the Florida governor has used multiple times, even naming a piece of legislation after it and describing Sunshine State as the place where "woke goes to die." But what does that word mean?
Last week, the legal fight for Andrew Warren – the twice-elected Hillsborough state attorney who was suspended by Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year – reached the inside of the courtroom as he argued for his job back. On August 4, the governor suspended Warren for incompetence and neglect of duty. The governor pointed to two pledges Warren had signed not to prosecute abortion and gender-affirming cases. DeSantis, at the time, criticized Warren's "woke" politics. In response, Warren noted, "The governor’s order is just based on pure conjecture and lies about what he thinks I’m going to do with cases that haven’t even come before me yet." During the testimony, Warren's attorney, Jean-Jacques Cabou asked those within DeSantis' administration what "woke" meant to them. The governor's general counsel, Ryan Newman, said, in general, it means "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." He added that DeSantis doesn't believe there are systemic injustices in the country, reports Florida Politics. "To me, it means someone who believes that there are systemic injustices in the criminal justice system, and on that basis they can decline to fully enforce and uphold the law," Newman said, according to Florida Politics. Taryn Fenske, the communications director for DeSantis, described "woke" as a "slang term for activism…progressive activism," reports Florida Politics. The trial wrapped up Thursday evening. U.S. Federal Judge Robert Hinkle said he will begin reviewing the case in two weeks, the earliest his schedule would allow. The loser of Hinkle’s ruling will likely appeal the decision to the Eleventh district court of appeals in Georgia. If the governor wins his appeal and they uphold Warren’s suspension that would be the end of the road for Warren's legal battle. However, if Warren wins, he will be reinstated immediately and the acting state attorney, Suzy Lopez, appointed by the governor, will have to step aside.
When Ron DeathSantis isn't cosplaying as a Top Gun pilot or ignoring science, he's busy being Florida's favorite fascist. Make no mistakes about it. He's a vile little man. I genuinely loathe this sad excuse of a person. He represents the worst of America.
I've watched from afar as Ron DeSantis and his christofascism attacks fundamental freedom and personal sovereignty, but this latest news perfectly encapsulates what a fucking idiot this guy is. As the official woke boogeyman, it's a fair question. "What does woke even mean?" According to DeSantis and his SS, before defining "woke," the following things were "woke."
via: Washington Post
Last year, DeSantis championed an egregiously on-the-nose piece of legislation called the “Stop W.O.K.E.” Act. Roughly centered on the use of “critical race theory” — under its inflated, toxic new definition — it limited what schools, universities and private businesses could teach students or employees.
“I think what you see now with the rise of this ‘woke’ ideology is an attempt to really delegitimize our history and to delegitimize our institutions,” DeSantis said then. “And I view the wokeness as a form of cultural Marxism.” This was meant literally, in part. A new training regimen on U.S. history meant to elide the insidious influence of “critical race theory” was derided by teachers as inaccurate and for downplaying slavery. But it was also meant in the abstract. “Woke” means accommodating the ways in which America is changing and in which non-White and non-cis Americans are incorporated into the public conversation. DeSantis and other Republicans understand that the narrow understanding of “woke” and “critical race theory” are less useful than broader ones in which those terms are slang references to something like “dumb stuff the left wants that undermines the way things have always been.”
According to DeSantis' lawyers, woke is "the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them." Saying that everything is perfect and there are no issues sounds like China or Russia to me.
I don't care what side of the aisle you fall on; if you agree with that definition, you're a fucking idiot. I don't care if this comes off as rude; these people sure as shit don't care, so two can play that game. Before DeSantis makes history illegal in Florida public schools or completely rewrites it, let's remember that America was built on injustice. "Our" land was stolen from the natives, and enslaved people were used to cultivate that land and produce goods for centuries. As a nearly 31 year man, it's easy to get caught up in time, but it's insane how recent some of America's biggest injustices were. Women couldn't vote before 1920. There were no black Major leaguers when World War II ended. Most of us have family members who were alive during Jim Crow. There are millions of other examples I don't have the time or emotional energy to dive into that still affect us today. Even racists know that non-whites don't get the same treatment. There are systemic injustices all around this country. Look at the quality of public schools in cities with high minority populations. How about living in a capitalist society where wages stay stagnant but the cost of living constantly skyrockets? That affects people of all races and identities. I just don't understand how anybody can say there aren't injustices in American society that need to be addressed. I had my head in the sand for the longest time and didn't believe it, either. Then I woke up and realized how fucked up things are. I had bought into the propaganda that America is the world's greatest country. I was ignorant and learned from my mistakes (you know? like what people are supposed to do in life). Don't get me wrong, there are worse places to be, and small-minded morons who can't hold multiple thoughts or viewpoints simultaneously will be like, see, America isn't so bad. It's like telling a 3rd degree burn victim their injuries aren't so bad because other people died in the fire. Just because someone else got it worse doesn't mean the other person's situation is ideal. We should always be striving forward. Ron DeathSantis only believes in freedom if you agree with him, which, spoiler alert, isn't freedom. He has zero empathy and feeds off the ignorant population in Florida that are products of some of the worst public schools in the country. His team's definition of "woke" is laughable. He'll continue to use it as a dog whistle while trailer trash, who can't afford toothpaste, keeps cheering him on in their toothless smiles. Saying you're anti-woke is like saying you're anti-progress with zero empathy. If DeSantis was born 100ish years earlier, I'm sure he would've called suffragettes and people trying to end child labor woke too. Upton Sinclair get your woke agenda out of here. Our green meats are perfect! When Ronny McFascist meets his maker someday, he'll send him somewhere much more south than Floriduh.
P.S.
Case and point.
