Nickelback has been one of the biggest punching bags for music fans to get their hate out on for what feels like my entire life now.
While I wouldn't consider myself a Nickelback guy, I will admit "How You Remind Me" is one of my favorite songs of all time. See, it was all about timing. That song came out when I was in 4th grade, or as I like to refer to it, the year I started really remembering life, and it was all I listened to. I had the CD single first, that was just two songs: "How You Remind Me" and an acoustic version of a song from a previous album "Leader of Men". I made Chad Kroeger as a character in my THPS2 on my N64, and eventually got the Silver Side Up CD. So I guess technically was a Nickelback fan. At least in 2001-02. Every time it came on the radio I'd sing along and make sure whoever I was in the car with wouldn't change it. I was obsesssssssed with "How You Remind Me". If it come on now, I still know every word. As I got older and into different music Nickelback kind of fell to the wayside for me, but I never like truly hated them. I thought some of the jokes were funny, and I could understand why people thought Chad Kroeger was a douchebag, but I really never cared enough about them to hate them. I saw them perform on tv once, I think at halftime during a Thanksgiving football game and they got booed a ton, and I can't lie I felt bad. It's embarrassing AF. I do think they just were a product of hate culture on the early internet, like it was cool to hate Nickelback just because they were Nickelback, everybody just piled on them. In this video Vice asks Nickelback fans what it is about them that makes them fans, which I think is a very interesting question. There's a reason we all like the music we like, so what's theres? Music although made for the masses can be one of the most personal things about someone. We all connect to it in different ways. To me, music can represents memories; where was I in my life when that song came out? What was I doing? Who was I with? What was going on in my life at the time? To me the music that I enjoy is simply the soundtrack of my life. There's song like "Get Low" or "Yeah" that bring me back to school dances, awkwardly looking for a girl to dance with. That's why Kid Cudi's first album will always make me think my senior year of high school and the memories of what was happening in my life while that was playing. When I hear "Life is Good" by Joe Walsh I go back to being out on the boat with my dad, because that song seemingly was on every single time we ever were on the water. That's how I'm wired, that's how I associate time, and events of life through the music. So to hear about that with a band that most people despise is pretty cool. Sure they're not my cup of tea, but as they as in the video, with over 50 million albums sold, somebody is obviously buying their shit. So sit back, enjoy and watch the most Canadian video of all time on why these Canucks love Nickelback (and hate Migos)
