Historically speaking, the U.S. has not had the most fair voting practices. At first they were like only land-owning white men can vote. They figured only powerful, rich, white men should have a say on how things are run. #foreshadowing Then one day the U.S. said it was cool if you didn’t own land, but your dick must be white. If you don’t have one tough luck! When the 15th Amendment was ratified in 1870, the U.S. was like okay fiiine; black men (lots didn’t use that term) can vote, as a treat. Legally speaking, black men had the right to vote, but rights and laws are only as strong as the enforcement. Sometimes white dudes would be like yo fam, we’re gonna kill you if you try to vote. Other times they were like “Pardon me, sir. Would you mind proving you can read?” On the surface that seems like a fair ask, if you can’t read, you probably shouldn’t get a say in decision making. Then you do 20 seconds of research/remember 10th grade and realize how they were designed to trick you and disenfranchise black people. Not nice! One wrong answer and you couldn’t vote. Like they say in baseball, strike one, you’re out. Say you somehow pass that “test”, now they’ll try to charge you to vote. If you couldn’t afford the tax, you simply couldn’t vote. (Rhode Island had a poll tax until the 20th century 😔) While all this was going on, women still couldn’t vote! It wasn’t until 1920 that the 19th Amendment was ratified. But even that wasn’t really enough, it didn’t say much of anything about non-white women so their status was kind of wishy-washy. FINALLY in 1965 (almost comically recent smh) black women finally had the right to vote across the nation. In an election year, tension is high. People are sensitive. There’s a lot at stake. Blah, blah, blah. The Democrats still don’t have their candidate (should’ve been Yang😞) A few nights ago country legend, Garth Brooks played in Detroit. He showed up in a jersey of a sports legend in that city; Barry Sanders. This is nothing new. Many artists have worn sports apparel of the city they’re in on stage. Other examples throughout history: In the defense of these idiot, he was wearing the Lions alternate jersey that debuted in 2017. Barry Sanders never wore that uniform during his career... BUT he’s also widely considered one of the best running backs in NFL history and definitely not Bernie Sanders. I get that not everybody follows football, but Barry Sanders is an icon that Grandmas could name. Wearing a Barry Sanders #20 jersey (in Detroit) did not sit well with some and ruined their black tie affair. In November these people’s votes will count the same as yours or mine!
While the disfranchisement from 1609-1965 was not cool; history is not simply black or white. Some of the ideas they had weren’t horrible; it was just the execution. The idea of a test to be able to vote isn’t that crazy. If the NFL Hall of Fame has such strict rules for who gets to decide who gets their head made out of bronze we prob as a country should have some restrictions as to who gets to decide how we are governed. Nobody is more pro freedom than, but just like Freedom of Speech is protected; freedom of consequence is not. If you’re stupid enough to think a Barry Sanders jersey is a political statement by GARTH BROOKS you should not be allowed to vote in the United States of America. Plain and simple. Your right is revoked. It doesn’t matter to me what gender/race/religion you are; if you’re an idiot, your opinion shouldn’t matter. We need to develop some sort of test to prove whether you’re worthy of voting. Idk how you do this without offending other idiots that are too stupid to see my great point, but whatever I need to go uber because Barstool still hasn’t texted me back 😩 Update: looks like we’ve got some friends in low places 😏
