2018:
Well-documented bittersweet year for the boi. Hopefully the Sox don't trade Mookie and Brady doesn't retire. Crazy how much things have changed so quickly! Musically this year produced a variety of things I enjoyed; here they are.
Again, the years are a loose guideline. Remember if there's a song omitted from the list, don't fret it could very well be in my top 40 for of the 2010s. — Doz (very niche!) #hiredozo (@DozonLife) January 7, 2020
"Shoe Boot" Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats
I've been saying it since the first time I heard this song, but it belongs in the opening credits of a 1970's cop movie. Leading off the DOL 2018 list isn't a horrible consolation.
"Sweet but Psycho" Ava Max
When I'm ubering I usually play FM radio because my car doesn't have a 21st century stereo so I heard this song a billion times and it grew on me.
"Stuck" The Aces
Another borderline year; came out in 2016, the album was released in 2018 and was featuring in my best of 2017 blog from 2017. I LOVE the Aces; it's only a matter of time before they blow up. TBH Stuck and Fake Nice should've.
"What's the Use?", "Hurt Feelings" Mac Miller
It's an absolute fucking shame it took the death of Mac Miller for me to really appreciate this album and the artist that was Mac Miller. Swimming is fantastic; robbed at the Grammys. I know I'm not the guy to give the takes people respect on hip hop/rap but this is one of the five best rap albums of the 2010's. Tragedy Mac is gone and never got to perform this album the way he wanted to and was so excited to leading up to his death.
"Stir Fry!" Migos
I like the Migos but do not understand how their success works. For my money stirfry is 10,000 times the song Walk it Like I Talk it Is. Many great memories associated with this song.
"SAD!" XXXtentacion
I wrote about XXX' passing when it took place; I stil stand by the majority of what I wrote. This guy definitely had a checked past and was not someone to be thought of as a hero. But he was a fucking kid and it looked like he was trying to get his shit in order. You're entitled to your own opinions but the way this guy died wasn't right. The whole emo/rap/lofi thing is just in its infancy and one of the forefathers is gone.
"Saltwater" Geowulf
I feel like I'm VERY off with the 2018 grouping here. TBH Hideaway should be on the list too as I keep realizing songs I forgot but it's already January 7th and this bicccc needs to get posted in full already.
"Mystik", "Cigarettes", "Salvation" Tash Sultana
2018 was the year of Tash for ole Dozie. Salvation is one of my memory alarm tones!
"Nothing Breaks Like a Heart (ft. Miley Cyrus) Mark Ronson
The part of the chorus that would be read as if was in parenthesis is my favorite.
Only You (ft. Tame Impala) Theophilus London
Funk with a side order of Tame Impala? I'll take seconds.
"Saturdays (ft. HAIM)" Twin Shadow
I''ll have the same as the last guy; sub HAIM.
"Love It If We Made It", "It's Not Living (If It's Not With You) The 1975
"We're fucking in a car shooting heroin saying controversial things just for the hell of it" perfectly encapsulates this album. I think it's not living is about heroin too, but I like to pretend it a love song.
"There's a Honey" Pale Waves
The co-ed Cure!
"Maria Tambien" Khruangbin
Being late to Khruangbin is one of my all time biggest fuck ups
"She's Kerosene" The Interrupters
What a perfect band name for band with a song like this; "She's Kerosene" punches you in the face out of nowhere with a ska sound that makes me yearn for the late 90's and in line, line, line, line, line skates.
"Hunger" Florence + the Machine
Flo goes there from the first verse. Right away you know this that passionate, stadium bumping folk/soul that Florence + the Machine have been churning out for over a decade. Personally, I'm more of early Florence guy. but Hunger gives fans a lit bit of early Florence sound with new. I kind of feel like a total crock of shit writing that, but it feels true to me. I'm much more of an upbeat, kick your ass Flo sound. High As Hope was a tad too slow for me; Hunger withstanding.
"New Light" John Mayer
John Mayer is ready to be a star!
Seeing this live at the Dunk was pretty rad. All time music video.
"Paranoid" Post Malone
My personal favorite off of beerbongs and bentleys.
"God's Plan" Drake
I love my broskis.
"Light On" Maggie Rogers
Voice of an Angel leaving the light on for you. Doesn't get much better.
"a lot" 21 Savage
This isn't your older brother's 21 Savage song.
"PASS OUT (ft. 21 Savage), "FLIP THE SWITCH (ft. Drake) Quavo
Really fucked with this album when it came out. My rap tastes make no sense but I fuck with Quavo heavy. Neither of these are real music videos so I wouldn't be shocked if they're pulled when we look back at this blog in a few months.
