There are much more significant issues at hand(maid's tale), but I'm going to focus on the New England Patriots most recent 1st Round Draft pick for my sanity!
So as I mentioned in my last blog, I hung out with my dad all day (3:45 pm until about 25 seconds after the Celtics game ended). We watched the C's shoot the lights out (in the first half) against the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks. It was awesome. Unfortunately, he's not exactly the best conversationalist (nor am I), so I put on some Youtube before tipoff while I debated saying, "let's fuckin rip a joint old man; you ain't getting drug tested anymore," but pussied out as is my nature. I also introduced him to ITYSL, but we watched like two hours of old SNL clips.
Peppered in between some laughs, we talked a little Boston sports like the men we are! We talked C's; I explained to him how 5th-year options work with first-round NFL draft picks and that the Patriots first-round selection ruffled some feathers (mine included).
Now I openly admit that I don't follow college football. I knew MAYBE 10 prospects' names going into the draft. I'll also concede that Bill Belichick has a greater football mind than me (although he'd never come up with an offense as dynamic as the Dozo-system) even though nailing draft picks is not his swag. But unless Cole Strange turns into an All-Pro caliber player, I think taking a small school offensive lineman was a reach, especially with other needs and the Pats track record of successful mid-round O-line picks. HOWEVER, after actually listening to this dude speak, I am 1,000,000% rooting for him and this move makes so much sense from a Patriot-perspective.
I mean, I was rooting for him regardless. Just because I followed the internet mob and shat on the Pats draft despite knowing essentially none of the prospects doesn't mean I don't want this cat to succeed. I thought Dugger was a dumb pick in 2020 but was man enough to say I hope I'm wrong (which I was). I'll gladly be wrong with my knee-jerk reactions about the Strange pick.
We're still waiting on two more adjectives to describe the organization, but that's partly on the interviewer. All I know is that Cole Strange is a versatile gentleman who will fit in well in Foxboro. Patriot fans had every right to be butthurt about reaching for a SoCon guard at 29 overall when you lost a corner with 17 interceptions the last two years, but damnit, I like this guy.
