Ya boi Ole Dozo hasn't been behind the keys in a while (way too busy with real life BS...and I'm writing this while exhausted, so I apologize if I'm kinda basic/suck) and there's a ton to catch up on. I tried blogging on Thursday, I wrote a SOD, but never put out a meat and potatoes blog. Enough recapping...Let's dive into this blog potpourri!
First and foremost, R.I.P. Tim Wakefield.
That news was downright heartbreaking, especially with Curt Schilling disrespecting Tim's wishes and blowing up his spot on some podcast that nobody with a brain cares about. Death is almost always sad, and seeing someone so beloved and younger than my parents die this way is devastating—my heart breaks for his children. I just hope Tim was at peace when he passed. Hopefully, his wife can beat the cancer she's currently battling.
None of John Henry's scuzziness can take away all the love I have for the Red Sox before 2020 when he decided to trade Mookie Betts to save money despite being a billionaire owner of one of the league's premier franchises. I already feel bad enough that Wake isn't getting his own blog, so no more focus on anybody other than him for this section of the brain dump, but I can't just not take a dig at John Henry. Tim Wakefield started the first Red Sox game I ever went to on August 2nd, 2004, in St. Pete vs. the then Devil Rays. That day was also his birthday. I loved the Red Sox before that game, but that night started a nearly 20-year love affair with the old ball club. It's such a cliche, but Wake was the consummate pro. He did it all for the Sox. Started, closed, middle relief, and spent countless hours giving back to the community. When I think of Tim Wakefield, I think of selflessness. In 2007, he took himself off the playoff roster because it was what was best for the Red Sox at the time. I don't know how many other guys would put their egos aside like that. Of course, there's the Doug Mirabelli connection. Wake's personal catcher seemed to be the only man alive who could handle the knuckleball. When the Red Sox re-acquired Mirabelli in 2006, how he returned to Fenway only added to the legend of Tim Wakefield.
I hope the Sox do the right thing and retire Tim Wakefield's #49. He's a team Hall of Famer and meant so much more to the Red Sox than his stats could explain (although he did win 200 games!). Given the Red Sox's ability to fuck up the easiest decisions, I'm not holding my breath, but it seems like a no-brainer to retire #49. I am also down for renaming Jersey Street to Wakefield Way. R.I.P.
P.S. Tim Wakefield is not the first athlete of the Astroturf era to die of brain cancer. I'm no scientist, but I'm sure there were materials used that weren't healthy for humans. I know there are conspiracies about the old Vet with the alarmingly high number of former Phillies to get cancer. With all the increased calls for natural grass in the NFL, it's time to play all outdoor sports on GRASS in America. I know fake grass is easier to manage, but it's time we start looking at the consequences
The Celtics Traded Rob Williams and Malcolm Brogdon for Jrue Holliday
I'm gonna miss Time Lord. He was a textbook fan favorite and dripped swag. I loved how he played defense and what he brought to this team with his length and energy. That said, the injury concerns were getting...concerning. Rob missed over 45 games last year and 20+ games the previous two seasons. That makes losing him a little easier to handle, but I'm still gonna miss watching him pin down four blocks a night.
As for Brogdon...he was fantastic last year, but after he got hurt in the playoffs, he wasn't the same. He shot like 5% from the floor. I've heard about complications with his arm, so good on Brad for moving him for a stud (but aging) point guard in Jrue Holiday. I love the revenge factor for Jrue vs. Milwaukee and how they handled his trade. #notnice. It's hard to believe with Marcus gone, but the C's backcourt might be even better defensively with D-White and Jrue. The C's lost a lot of their depth, and I'm still worried about Porzingus holding up, but there's no denying this team is trying to win a championship. To do that, you're gonna have to make some hard decisions. While I will miss Rob (and Marcus), it'll be much easier to handle them donning different uniforms at a championship parade sometime in late June. P.S. Is this the year we see PP step up??? There's going to be plenty of minutes available for him.
The Patriots Fucking SUCK
Never in my 20+ years of fandom have I seen a more pathetic two-game stretch for the Patriots. 1.5 PPG in the last two weeks. 35-3, and 34-0 Ls. These were literally the two most lopsided losses of the Belichick era, which isn't that surprising considering...Tom Brady, but honestly, I'm not tripping. Losing to the Saints 34-0 is peanuts compared to losing an AFC Championship Game to Peyton Manning. At least now I'll get my money's worth out of Sunday Ticket. Sidenote: You should be able to choose the combination of games for mulit-view on YoutubeTV.
I went into this season with low expectations, and after surviving losing Brady and Mookie during a worldwide pandemic, I can handle a down year. There's plenty of Patriots Super Bowl content available for free on YouTube! I'll spare you with all the "we were spoiled for 20 years" cliches, but it's true, and you knew days like these were coming. Nothing lasts forever, and unfortunately, we're witnessing the demise of one of the game's all-time great coaches. I'm not sure we'll see him break the win record as the Patriots HC. Some give Brady all the credit, and I believe that's a mistake. Both were crucial. It's like a motorcycle. You need both wheels. I thiiiink what we're seeing here (with Bill) is the game passing him by, which looks worse without Brady (also, he should be fired as GM). There's a track record of this happening to legends who coached for too long. Chuck Noll and Tom Landry immediately come to mind. If Vince Lombardi lived and coached into the 1980s he probably would've struggled too. Could he have stopped Dan Marino??? It feels like Bill thinks he can still get away with bargain shopping, but when you don't have Tom Brady to cover up all your flaws and cheap parts, they're much easier to expose—also, speed matters. Today's NFL is about playmakers, and the Patriots have none. Yes, Mac has regressed and some blame has to go on his shoulders, but IMO, most belongs with how he was (or wasn't) coached. Parlay that with traffic cones at both tackle spots and quite possibly the worst skill position group in the NFL, and you get this bottom-five team in the league disgrace. I think Mac can still be the guy, but he needs some fucking help. He has no time to get the ball to the open man.
P.S.
There was no reason to trade Nick Folk. He was automatic inside of 40. Now we have some rookie kicker in a safety number who stinks! That deal was a real head scratcher (prob cap related, blah, blah, balh). Belichick knows the importance of special teams, he shouldn't have moved Folk.
There's a New (but also old) War in the Middle East :(
In a topic way more heavy and consequential than NBA transactions, some shit is going downnn in Israel, and I'm gonna be frank with you...my knowledge is not where it should be on this topic. I know it's fuck Hamas (anybody who goes after women and children is a bitch) and that there's been serious beef since Israel's creation after WW2, but with all the insane issues in the U.S. (climate denial, misinformation, school shootings and the lack of government intervention to stop them, late-stage capitalism, and a crumbling democracy, etc.) it's hard to focus on shit overseas. It's similar to Ukraine in that I care about the innocent, regular people, but I'm not gonna pretend I'm super informed on a topic where I'm not.
That doesn't mean I don't care; we only have so much human bandwidth and most of mine is focused on stopping fascism. It's heartbreaking to see and hear the reports of the horrors. It's fucking asinine that people use "religion" as excess for this death and destruction. I don't wanna see any innocent people die. I don't care what they look like or believe in. All people deserve basic human dignity and the ability to live a happy, healthy, and successful life. To quote Forrest Gump, "and that's all I have to say about that."
DVDs/Blu-Rays Shouldn't Be Obsolete Yet
I recently moved, and part of that move included packing up all the DVDs and Blu-rays I've acquired over the years. Part of me thought I should get rid of these (these totes are fucking heavy!!!), but I love my collection. I spent too much money on these things to throw them away like vegetables I bought trying to be healthy but never ate. Plus, you don't wanna make the same mistake your parents did with their cartons of 45s. Blu-rays will make a comeback in about 30 years and 2050s hipsters will claim the sound quality is better than streaming or whatever the norm is in that fake year.
Yes, the convenience of streaming rocks, but owning a physical copy does have some advantages. Stuff comes and goes off streaming services all the time. Like I don't wanna have to count on Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me being on Netflix or Hulu this month. That's where physical media is still king...you never have to worry about it "leaving in 10 days." Plus, you can watch DVDs/Blu-rays when the Wi-Fi goes down. It bums me out that my Mac doesn't have a DVD drive because I would totally watch some of my DVDs as background shows while playing Madden (there's so much dead time in a game...you're a fool if you're not multitasking while playing). I've looked at getting an external drive, but it's not a priority purchase rn. My venmo is open if you're looking to help. Maybe it's just me getting old, but seeing this piece of technology go by the wayside is wild. I was alive for their whole ride. I remember when DVDs were a huge deal and a sign you were rich. YOU DON'T HAVE TO REWIND THEM!!! Disc media still feels like a valuable piece of technology, but this may be how people sounded with cassettes or 8-tracks a million years ago.
There's No Legit Reason For Rhode Island to Update Its License Plates
My car is currently in the shop, but once it's out, I gotta update my registration and get the new RI plates. I don't understand why. Like what is wrong with this?
It'd be one thing if there was a full-on rehaul, but all we did was make the waves more choppy and make the plate flat. To me this just feels like a way to generate money for the state that won't be used to better the lives of its citizens. I don't need this extra inconvenience and neither do you! Who is this new plate helping? How about we pave some of these fucking pot holes instead of tweaking the number of waves on the plate and getting rid of the cool 3-D feel of the numbers.
I'm So Excited That SNL is Back This Weekend
People who think SNL sucks probably don't watch it. Last season was hilarious but unfortunately cut short due to the writer strikes. I'm all for the working class getting what they deserve, so I'm pumped both sides came to a resolution so this staple of American comedy can finally return (I'm all set with a double Bad Bunny episode next week thooooo). I'll be busy at a wedding after-party for the premiere, but you best believe I'll check it out hungover Sunday morning before football starts.
I knew that JAJ and Sarah Squirm would get promoted to full-time; both are fucking STARS, and I'm so pumped for them both. There's only one new cast member this season, Chloe Troast. I know literally nothing about her, but best of luck!
Lastly, Steely Dan is the Greatest Jazz-Rock Fusion Band of All-Time.
I've watched this super rare footage more than any person alive.
Ya boi went #Viral on R/SteelyDan last week (and Kid Charbonnet is 3-2 after starting 0-2!!!)
P.S.
I'm sorry if this offends, but Lays Stax > Pringles.
